Let me say the part nobody wants in the headline: as I write this on October 8, nobody outside Amazon MGM can tell you who the next James Bond is. Not me, not the sites shouting "confirmed," and not Gary Oldman, however confident he sounded. What we have instead is the strangest, most entertaining game of telephone in movies, and a lot of people are treating a wink like a press release.

So instead of adding to the pile, I tried something more useful. I sorted everything into what is officially confirmed, what has only been hinted, and what is plain noise, then wrote down what I actually think is going on. The short version: I think Amazon is playing this exactly right, even if it's driving every one of us a little nuts.

The Key Points

  • Amazon MGM has not announced who will play 007 in Bond 26. Its last official word, back in May, was that the search is underway and that it won't discuss details until the time is right.
  • Confirmed behind the camera: Denis Villeneuve directs, Steven Knight writes, and Amy Pascal and David Heyman produce. There is no title and no release date.
  • Jack Lowden is the name everyone keeps landing on after comments from Gary Oldman, Steven Knight and Saoirse Ronan. Not one of them confirmed it.
  • Pascal said in August that the end of the year was a good bet for casting news. That's a hope, not a promise from the studio.

What is officially confirmed about Bond 26

If you only want the facts, here they are. Everything below was announced or said on the record by the people involved, and I've left out anything that only lives in a rumor.

Feb. 2025Amazon MGM Studios takes creative control of the franchise from Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson
Mar. 2025Amy Pascal and David Heyman are named as the new producers
June 25, 2025Denis Villeneuve is confirmed as director
July 31, 2025Steven Knight, the creator of Peaky Blinders, is confirmed as writer
May 14, 2026Amazon says the search for the next Bond is underway and that it won't comment on specifics during casting
Sept. 2026Knight says the first draft of the script is finished
Oct. 5, 2026James Bond Day brings new Bond books and watches, but no casting announcement

Now look at what's missing from that list: an actor, a title, a release date, a start date. Every answer to the question people are actually Googling is still blank. I find that oddly comforting. It means the story is still unwritten.

The rumor scorecard: how much to trust each claim

I built this one myself. The badge is how I'd classify each claim, and the dots are how much weight I'd put on it, from one (fun to talk about) to five (treat it as settled). Nothing here earns more than three dots, because nothing here is official.

  • Hint3 / 5

Gary Oldman: "They have picked him"

In early September, on a Canadian morning show, the Slow Horses star said the studio has made its choice and just hasn't announced it, and that he's hoping it's his co-star Jack Lowden. The catch is that Oldman isn't on the Bond team. He may know something, or he may be repeating the same chatter the rest of us have heard. Amazon has not confirmed any of it.

  • Hint3 / 5

Steven Knight on BBC Radio 4, Sept. 8

Asked whether the new Bond was already cast, Knight wouldn't say. Pressed on when he learned who the actor would be, he laughed and pointed back to his earlier answer. He has also told Variety that knowing who the person is makes life a little easier, but that you write the character, not the actor. That's a very Bond kind of dodge, and a dodge is not a confirmation.

  • Reported3 / 5

    Villeneuve wants a fresh face

Deadline reported back in September 2025 that Villeneuve is aiming for a relatively unknown British or Irish actor, likely in his late 20s or early 30s. That fits the franchise's history, since none of Connery, Lazenby or Craig were household names when they started. It's a report, not a statement, but it's the most sensible-sounding one in the pile.

  • Reported2 / 5

The Page Six shortlist, Aug. 26

The list named Callum Turner, Jack Lowden, Jacob Elordi, Paul Mescal, Harris Dickinson and Jack Barton. Men's Journal points out that nobody has confirmed the list is real, and Puck's Matt Belloni has called the lists circulating online "bogus," according to The James Bond Dossier. Fun reading, shaky foundation.

  • Guess2 / 5

    The betting odds, Sept. 12

A prediction market had Lowden at 51%, Turner at 36%, Jack Barton at 18% and Paul Mescal at 10%. Add those four up and you get 115%, which tells you these aren't a clean forecast. They're a crowd's mood, and moods follow headlines, not secrets.

  • Guess1 / 5

Saoirse Ronan: "I'm hoping it's Jack"

Speaking to the Associated Press, Ronan said Oldman "thinks" her husband Jack Lowden is Bond, that she herself doesn't know who it is, and that she's rooting for him. She wouldn't confirm or deny anything. It's a lovely quote and zero evidence, which is exactly how she framed it.

  • Noise0 / 5

    "Officially cast" headlines

At least one entertainment site has run a headline declaring a specific actor officially confirmed as Bond. I'm not repeating the name, because no studio announcement backs it up, and Amazon's own statement says it isn't commenting on casting details yet. This is the kind of headline that gets clicks and costs trust.

Why I think Amazon's silence is the smart play

I know the instinct, because I have it too: just tell us already. But look at what a Bond reveal actually is. It's one of the last moments in movies that everybody stops to look at, not only fans. When Daniel Craig was cast for Casino Royale, it was considered a controversial and risky choice at the time, and it turned into one of the most celebrated stretches in the whole series. A moment like that only lands if the studio gets to stage it.

The smartest thing Amazon can do with the biggest casting question in movies is make us wait, then make the answer feel like an event.

That's also why the winks bother me a little. A studio that wants a clean reveal can't stop co-stars and screenwriters from smiling at microphones, but every hint that leaks sideways takes something away from the day Amazon finally gets to say it out loud. I'd rather the hype went into the announcement than into a month of "sources say."

And remember who's doing the waiting. This is the first Bond built entirely under Amazon, after the Broccoli family stepped away, and plenty of fans were nervous about what that would mean. Villeneuve called Bond "sacred territory" when he took the job. A studio that treats the casting like sacred territory too is, to me, a good sign.

So who do I think it is?

If you forced me to pick today, I'd say Jack Lowden, and I'd hold that loosely. Here's what lines up: Oldman's remark, Knight's dodge, the betting favorite, and the fact that Nina Gold, who has been reported to be running the search, also works on Slow Horses. Here's what keeps me honest: nearly every one of those pieces traces back to one small circle of people who all know each other, and that's exactly how a rumor starts to feel like confirmation.

Lean Lowden, Not LockMy Bond Casting Call Today

Jack Lowden is my most likely name, with Callum Turner a clear second in my read. Nothing public confirms either one, and I'd treat anyone claiming certainty before Amazon speaks as selling something they don't have.

How to read a Bond casting headline in a minute

This part will outlast the news cycle. Whoever ends up in the tuxedo, the rumor machine will keep running until the announcement, so here's the quick test I use before I believe anything.

  1. Look for Amazon MGM's name next to a quote. If the studio isn't on the record, it's a rumor, no matter how confident the headline sounds.
  2. Ask who is actually talking.A co-star, a screenwriter or a spouse hoping out loud is a hint at best. None of them speaks for the studio.
  3. Watch the verb."Has been cast" and "may have been cast" are two very different sentences, and headlines love to blur them.
  4. Check the date.Old shortlists and old odds get recycled as if they were fresh. A list from August isn't news in October.
  5. Treat betting odds as a mood.Remember that four names added up to 115%. That's a crowd talking, not a leak.

What we know about timing

The honest answer to "when" is still "nobody has said." Here's the split between what's official and what's only reported.

Casting newsPascal said in August that the end of the year was a good bet. That's her read, not a studio commitment.
TitleNot announced
Release dateNot announced. Some reports point to 2028.
FilmingReported to start in 2027, after Villeneuve finishes Dune: Part Three. Not confirmed by Amazon.
Gustavo Henrique

The Take: Gustavo Henrique

We've been playing this guessing game since 2019, when it became clear No Time to Die was Daniel Craig's last. That's going on seven years of fan casting, shortlists and "my cousin's friend knows a guy." And I'll be honest: part of me loves it. Bond is one of the few things left that can get strangers arguing happily about the same question at the same time.

What I hope happens is simple. Whoever Amazon picks, I hope we get a few days of loud, joyful arguing, and then a year later we can't picture anyone else in the role. That's how it went with the ones who stuck. If it's the Slow Horses guy everyone's whispering about, great. If it's somebody nobody saw coming, even better.

Either way, I'm done treating winks as news. Tell me who you'd pick, and I'm happy to be wrong in public.
