Reacher is a man who owns a toothbrush and not much else. He has no address and no phone, and he travels light by choice. So it's a little funny that the show built around him now has about the most secure future on Prime Video.

Here's what happened. On Monday, Sept. 28, Prime Video renewed Reacher for a sixth season, twelve days after the Season 4 finale and while Season 5 was still being filmed in Toronto. On Thursday, Oct. 1, it renewed the spinoff Neagley for a second season, just fifteen days after all eight episodes arrived at once. Add it up and there are three seasons of Reacher-world TV ordered that nobody can watch yet.

I'll give you the facts first, clearly, because that's what you came for. Then I'll tell you what I think, which is that this is smart, slightly dizzying franchise-building with one number in the fine print that deserves more attention than it's getting. A note on how I'm working: I rely on the reporting and the published review scores, and I name who said what. I haven't watched Neagley start to finish, so my read of the show comes from critics and viewers, not my own screening. The opinions about the business are mine.

What to Know

  • Reacher was renewed for Season 6 on Sept. 28, with Season 5 still filming in Toronto. Season 5 adapts Make Me and has no release date.
  • Neagley was renewed for Season 2 on Oct. 1. Amazon says Season 1 hit 40 million viewers in 13 days and is the No. 4 original-series debut in Prime Video history.
  • Reacher Season 4 drew 66 million viewers in its first 28 days, per Amazon, which doesn't say how it counts viewers.
  • Critics like both shows (Neagley sits at 94% on Rotten Tomatoes). But Reacher's audience score fell from 91% in Season 1 to the mid-60s in Season 4, while Neagley's is around 83%.
  • My read: three seasons are now ordered and unreleased, the strategy is smart, and the audience score is the one warning light worth watching.

Reacher Season 6 and Neagley Season 2: what's confirmed and what isn't

Reacher S4Premiered Wednesday, Aug. 12 with three episodes, then weekly. The eight-episode season ended Sept. 16 and adapted Gone Tomorrow, the 13th novel, with the story set in Philadelphia, per Men's Journal.
Reacher S5Ordered in May, before Season 4 premiered. Filming began in late July in Toronto, per Comic Basics. It adapts Make Me, the 20th novel. No release date. MovieWeb says it's expected sometime in 2027, which is an expectation, not an announcement.
Reacher S6Renewed Monday, Sept. 28. Prime Video hasn't named the source novel, a release window, a production start or the cast, per T-Break and Men's Journal.
Neagley S1Eight episodes, all released Wednesday, Sept. 16, the same day as the Reacher Season 4 finale. Maria Sten stars as Frances Neagley, a private investigator in Chicago, with Alan Ritchson guest-starring as Reacher.
Neagley S2Renewed Thursday, Oct. 1. I couldn't find a release date, an episode count or a cast announcement as of Oct. 4.
RitchsonHe leads Season 5, which is filming now. Prime Video hasn't announced a Season 6 cast, though Ritchson has said he hopes the show runs at least 10 seasons, per MovieWeb.
Where to watchEverything streams on Prime Video: four seasons of Reacher and the first season of Neagley.

The part that jumps out is the bottom of that list. Two renewals, zero release dates. Prime Video is selling you a future it hasn't scheduled yet, and I think that's the whole point.

How early Amazon renews Reacher: my timeline

I wanted to see the pattern with my own eyes, so I lined up the renewals I could verify this week. It isn't every order in the show's history, just the ones that tell the story.

Feb. 7, 2022Season 2 ordered, three days after Season 1 premiered on Feb. 4. A classic reaction: the show hit, so Amazon said yes.
Oct. 2024Season 4 ordered, months before Season 3 premiered on Feb. 20, 2025.
May 2026Season 5 ordered, before Season 4 premiered on Aug. 12.
Sept. 28, 2026Season 6 ordered, 12 days after the Season 4 finale and with Season 5 still filming.
Oct. 1, 2026Neagley Season 2 ordered, 15 days after Season 1 landed.

Read it top to bottom and the verb changes. In 2022, Amazon reacted. By 2024 it was betting. In 2026 it's committing, to a season that hasn't finished shooting. I don't think that's reckless. I think it's a company telling its rivals, its talent and its audience that this one is staying put.

There's a trade-off I'd weigh if I ran a streamer, though. Order seasons this far ahead and you've stopped letting the audience steer. Which brings me to the audience.

How many people watched Neagley and Reacher Season 4?

Amazon handed out two big numbers this month, and they deserve a careful look before anyone calls this a landslide.

Reacher and Neagley: Amazon's Viewership Claims, Side by Side
Figures are Amazon's, as reported by TheWrap, Variety and Comic Basics. Amazon doesn't define how it counts viewers, and the time windows differ, so this is not an apples-to-apples comparison.
WhatThe claimMy take
Reacher Season 4The claim66 million viewers in its first 28 days, ahead of Season 3My takeThe flagship is still growing, not fading
Neagley Season 1The claim40 million viewers in its first 13 days, the No. 4 original-series debut in Prime Video historyMy takeA very big start for a spinoff, and spinoffs usually struggle
Neagley's audienceThe claim52% outside the U.S., with strong showings in the U.K., Germany and BrazilMy takeThat's a global show, which is how you justify a franchise
The franchiseThe claimReportedly more than 200 million viewers since 2022My takeGreat headline, hard to verify

Here's my napkin math, and I want to be upfront that it's crude. Neagley's 40 million over 13 days works out to about 3.1 million viewers a day, and Reacher Season 4's 66 million over 28 days to about 2.4 million a day. I wouldn't lean on that. The early days of any release are the heaviest, so a shorter window flatters the average. The honest conclusion is that both are big, and Amazon hasn't given us a like-for-like comparison.

What I'd say is this: viewer counts are an invitation, not a verdict. They tell you how many people pressed play. They don't tell you how many were glad they did.

The critics-versus-fans gap, and why it's my warning light

This is the part I wanted to write all along. Rotten Tomatoes keeps two numbers for every show, one from critics and one from regular viewers. For Reacher, they've been drifting apart for four years.

Critics vs. Fans on Rotten Tomatoes: The Reacher Gap (My Math)
Critics scores per Forbes and Rotten Tomatoes. Audience scores per Screen Rant, as of mid-to-late September. Scores move, and Season 4's audience score was reported at both 65% and 67%; I used 65%. The gap column is my own subtraction.
ShowCritics vs. audienceThe gap (my math)
Reacher Season 1Critics vs. audience92% vs. 91%The gapAbout 1 point. Basically everyone agreed
Reacher Season 2Critics vs. audience98% vs. 77%The gap21 points
Reacher Season 3Critics vs. audience98% vs. 74%The gap24 points
Reacher Season 4Critics vs. audience94% vs. about 65%The gapAbout 29 points, the widest of the four
Neagley Season 1Critics vs. audience94% vs. about 83%The gapAbout 11 points

Watch that last column go: 1, 21, 24, 29. Critics have liked every season of Reacher. The people watching at home like it a little less each year, and Season 4 has the widest gap of the bunch.

Why? Honestly, nobody outside Amazon can say for sure. Screen Rant argues that Neagley benefited from being released all at once, while Season 4's audience judged the show one episode a week. That's plausible. Another possibility is plain fatigue: each season swaps in a new book, a new town and a new set of villains, and some fans may just want more of the people they already know. A third is that audience scores are noisy and tilt toward viewers motivated enough to vote, so I wouldn't build a theory on one number.

Here's what I'd say with some confidence. A show can draw 66 million viewers and a mid-60s audience score at the same time, and when that happens, I think it's being carried by habit as much as by love. Habit is powerful. It also fades.

Warning LightMy Read, Not a Prediction of Doom

Nothing here says Reacher is in trouble. It says the people who watch are getting a little less delighted each season. That's the kind of drift a hit can fix, but only if someone is paying attention to it. Season 5 is the test.

And here's the hopeful part. Neagley's score suggests the audience hasn't soured on this world. It may just want a different door into it, and Amazon seems to have noticed.

Is Neagley worth watching? My verdict

Worth WatchingMy Read From the Reviews, Not a Screening

As I read the critics, Neagley trades some of Reacher's swagger for character work, and most reviewers think the trade is worth it. If you came for fists and one-liners, adjust your expectations. If you came for Maria Sten, you're in luck.

The 94% hides a real argument, so here's who said what. Empire's Amon Warmann says the show is lighter on muscle but richer in intimate character work, with Sten giving a pitch-perfect lead performance. TheWrap's review is encouraged, but notes the series gives up some of the franchise's outsized fun in exchange for more emotional depth. On the other side, Variety's Alison Herman gave it a rotten rating because, in her view, Reacher himself is a reason to watch his show and Neagley has no equivalent. RogerEbert.com's reviewer made a similar point about the show missing its Jack Reacher, per MovieWeb. And Alan Sepinwall wrote that the creators had to build both the season's plot and Neagley's backstory from nothing, per CBR.

Here's how I'd sort the viewers:

  1. If you want fists and one-liners: expect less. Ritchson is a guest, and Comic Basics calls his Season 1 role a cameo.
  2. If you liked Neagley inside Reacher: you'll probably want her story. She appeared in 20 of the first 24 episodes, per Forbes.
  3. If you've never seen Reacher: you can start here, since the show is built to stand alone. TVLine notes her role grew in Season 2, which is where I'd begin if you want to meet her first.
  4. If you hate waiting week to week: all eight episodes are out, so you can finish it this weekend.

Reacher after Season 6: three predictions

These are guesses, dated Oct. 4, 2026, not facts.

Season 5 arrives in 2027High confidence

MovieWeb reports it's expected sometime in 2027, and the show is filming now. Prime Video hasn't announced a date, so this is my bet, not a fact.

Prime names Season 6's book before Season 5 premieresMedium confidence

With 31 novels to choose from, per Men's Journal, there's no shortage. My guess is the reveal rides along with the Season 5 marketing.

Ritchson's Reacher gets a bigger role in Neagley Season 2Low confidence

Season 1 gave him a guest spot that Comic Basics calls a cameo. Amazon will want the crossover. What I'm hoping for is one great scene, not a takeover that undoes what critics liked.

Reacher and Neagley questions, answered fast

Has Reacher been renewed for Season 6?

Yes. Prime Video announced the renewal on Monday, Sept. 28, 2026, 12 days after the Season 4 finale and while Season 5 was still filming in Toronto. As of Oct. 4, Prime Video has not named the Season 6 source novel, a release window or a cast.

When does Reacher Season 5 come out?

There is no official release date yet. Season 5 is filming in Toronto, and MovieWeb reports it is expected sometime in 2027, but that is an expectation and not an announcement from Prime Video.

What is Reacher Season 5 about?

It adapts Make Me, the 20th novel in Lee Child's Jack Reacher series. I couldn't find an official plot synopsis, and MovieWeb describes the book as possibly the most brutal story in the saga, so it may turn out darker than most seasons.

Has Neagley been renewed for Season 2?

Yes. Prime Video announced the Season 2 renewal on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2026, 15 days after all eight Season 1 episodes were released on Sept. 16. No release date, episode count or cast has been announced that I could find.

How many people watched Neagley?

Amazon says Neagley Season 1 reached 40 million viewers globally in its first 13 days, making it the No. 4 most-watched original-series debut in Prime Video history, with 52% of viewing outside the U.S. Amazon doesn't say how it counts viewers, so treat the figure as a company claim.

Is Alan Ritchson in Neagley?

Yes, as a guest star playing Jack Reacher. Comic Basics describes his Season 1 role as a cameo, and the series is built to stand on its own.

Do I need to watch Reacher before Neagley?

No, the spinoff is built to stand on its own. Still, Maria Sten appeared in 20 of the first 24 Reacher episodes, per Forbes, so her history will mean more if you've seen the parent show. TVLine notes her role grew in Reacher Season 2, which is where I'd start if you want to meet her first.

What is Neagley's Rotten Tomatoes score?

When I checked, Rotten Tomatoes listed 94% from 31 critics reviews and an audience score around 83%. Scores move, and the audience figure has been reported anywhere from 82% to 87%.
