If you have been wondering whether tonight’s Ghosts Halloween special is a real episode or just a seasonal snack, the honest answer is a little of both. It runs two parts across a single hour on CBS, it lands a couple of months after Season 5 ended with Pete fading away, and it is the only new Ghosts you are getting until Season 6 shows up in 2027, apart from a Christmas special on Dec. 10.
I am writing this before it airs, so there are no spoilers here and no review. What I have is the schedule, the setup, a refresher on where everyone was left, and one opinion I feel strongly about: sending Sam away for a Halloween special might be the smartest stress test this show could give itself. Let’s get into it, starting with the stuff you need before 9 p.m.
What to Know
- Airs tonight, Thursday, Oct. 29, 9 to 10 p.m. ET/PT on CBS. Paramount+ has it too, live on the Premium plan or on demand the next day.
- The title is “Halloween 6: The Mirror – Parts One & Two.” Kyle (Ben Feldman) helps with the ghosts while Sam is in Australia, and Hetty meets her estranged sister, Margaret (Maria Thayer).
- Season 6 comes at midseason in early 2027 with no exact date. The Christmas special is listed for Thursday, Dec. 10.
- My take: the special is a test of whether Woodstone works without its translator. My stakes board and my three things to watch are below.
If you have seen Season 5, make time for it tonight. The setup is built around the one thing the show left hanging, Pete, and it puts the supporting living cast in front for an hour. If you are brand new, you can follow it, but spend two minutes on the spoiler drawer below first. I have not seen the special, so treat this as a plan for how to watch it, not a review of it.
Tonight at a glance
- 9 PMStart time, ET and PT, on CBS. That is the 9|8c slot, so 8 p.m. Central
- 2 partsBoth halves of “The Mirror” fit inside the 9 to 10 p.m. hour
- DEC. 10The Ghosts Christmas special, per Paramount+
- $8.99Where Paramount+ says its plans start, per month
The times, the Dec. 10 date and the $8.99 price come from CBS and Paramount+’s own guide, and the Central time is simple conversion from the 9|8c listing. Prices and plan features can change, so check the app before you subscribe.
Three ways to watch the Ghosts Halloween special
There is no wrong way, but there is a best way for each kind of night. Here is how I would choose.
- Watch live on CBS
9 p.m. ET/PT, 8 Central. If you have an antenna or cable, this is the simplest route and the one that lets you text your group chat in real time. Check your local listings in case your area has special programming.
- Stream it live with Paramount+ Premium
Paramount+ says Premium subscribers can stream new episodes live as they air on CBS. This is the cord-cutter version of route one.
- Wait for tomorrow on demand
Paramount+ says subscribers on any plan can watch on demand starting the day after an episode airs. If you want to stay spoiler-free, this is the route that asks you to stay off social media for a day, which on Halloween night is a big ask.
New to the show? All five earlier seasons are streaming on Paramount+, and Ghosts is based on the BBC sitcom known in the U.S. as Ghosts UK, also on the service, according to Paramount+.
What is confirmed and what is not
Because the special airs tonight, there is a lot of preview material floating around, and not all of it agrees. Here is how I sorted it.
- ConfirmedTime, title, setup and cast
The special airs Oct. 29 from 9 to 10 p.m. ET/PT on CBS. CBS’s description says Sam is away in Australia on Polar Opposites, Kyle helps look after the ghosts, Hetty reunites with her estranged sister, Margaret, and Bela throws an unconventional Halloween party. Ben Feldman joins the regular cast as Kyle in Season 6.
- Described differentlyThe mirror
Previews do not tell the same story. One says Hetty gets pulled into a mirror and meets Margaret there, another says Margaret’s spirit is trapped in an antique mirror, and a third has Jay bringing home a mirror haunted by her. The common thread is a mirror and Margaret. I will not pretend to know the mechanics.
- Counted differentlyIs this the Season 6 premiere?
Some outlets call the special a de facto premiere, and one calls it the first two-episode premiere the show has had. Another reports that Season 6 has a standard 22-episode order, not counting the two holiday specials. I will call it a special that leads into Season 6.
- Not publicPete’s fate, Sam’s screen time and the Season 6 date
CBS’s description says nothing about how Pete’s story resolves. It also does not say how much Sam appears on screen, and no exact Season 6 premiere date has been announced beyond early 2027.
Season 5 in 60 seconds (spoilers ahead)
If you are caught up, skip this. If you are not, open the drawer. It only covers the finale and what carries into tonight.
Tap to open the Season 5 spoiler recap
In the finale, Mayor Tad (Justin Kirk) sells his stake in the mansion to a shady water company that plans to bulldoze the place for a data center. Sam and Jay race to get Woodstone declared a historical landmark, and the ghosts pitch in, including some surprisingly resourceful moves from Amunhotep (Farhang Ghajar). It works, and the mansion is saved.
The win costs them. While Jay and Kyle were overseas tracking down the proof they needed, Pete (Richie Moriarty) wandered too far from the property line for too long and faded away completely. Paramount+ calls how, or whether, he comes back one of the biggest questions heading into Season 6, along with what the mysterious group known as the Others is up to. Tonight’s special begins a couple of months after that.
Who has the most at stake tonight: my stakes board
This is my own ranking, not anything CBS or the cast has said. I scored each character on how much the special seems to ask of them, going only by the official description and the previews. A fuller meter means more riding on tonight.
- HettyStakes: 5 of 5What the special gives herA reunion with her estranged sister, Margaret (Maria Thayer). My readHetty runs on pride and propriety, so a family wound she never got to settle is the kind of story that can crack that armor. It is the most emotional setup on the board.
- KyleStakes: 4 of 5What the special gives himThe job of helping babysit the ghosts while Sam is away. He is also being promoted to series regular for Season 6.My readKyle can see and hear the ghosts like Sam, which makes him the natural stand-in. If the special works, it is proof the writers can build the show around more than one living person who can talk to the dead.
- JayStakes: 3 of 5What the special gives himA house full of ghosts he cannot see, with the person who translates for him on the other side of the world. My readJay is the audience’s other proxy. A haunted-object story puts him in the funniest possible position: the one who has to trust what he cannot see.
- BelaStakes: 2 of 5What the special gives herAn unconventional Halloween party at Woodstone, per CBS.My readParties on this show tend to be where the chaos and the heart collide. I would not be shocked if it is the comic engine of the hour, though that is my guess, not a confirmed detail.
- PeteStakes: ? of 5What the special gives himNothing confirmed. The special starts a couple of months after he faded away.My readHis absence is the story underneath the story. I cannot score a character with no confirmed role, but I can tell you I will be looking for him in every scene.
My take: why I think sending Sam away is a smart test
Here is the opinion I promised. For five seasons, Ghosts has run through Sam. She is the translator, the mediator and, as Paramount+ puts it, the occasional therapist for the Woodstone ghosts. Taking her out of the house for the first two episodes of a new stretch could look like a gamble. I think it is a smart one.
A sitcom with a big ensemble lives or dies on whether the ensemble can carry an hour without its anchor. By putting Kyle in the babysitter chair, giving Jay the haunted-object problem and handing Hetty a family story, the writers are asking whether Woodstone has become a world and not just a premise. If the answer is yes, Season 6 has a lot more room to play. If the answer is no, better to find out in a holiday special than in a 22-episode run.
I also like the timing. A couple of months after Pete disappeared is long enough for the house to have moved on a little and short enough that it still hurts. Halloween is the one night of the year when a show about the dead can say something about loss without it feeling off-brand. If the special treats Pete’s absence with a light touch, funny but not dismissive, it will tell me the show still knows what it is about. I am optimistic, and I would be happy to be wrong about how the hour lands.

Why It Matters, by Gustavo Henrique
What I keep coming back to is how rare it is for a broadcast comedy to do something slightly scary to its own formula. Most network shows protect their lead at all costs. This one is sending her to another continent for a holiday episode and trusting the rest of the house to hold. That tells me the people behind it believe in the whole cast.
And there is something sweet in a show about people who cannot leave their house sending one of the living on a trip. Whatever happens tonight, I hope it feels like a Halloween party you were glad to be invited to.
Three things I will be watching tonight
These are not predictions, only the things I am most curious about. I will not know any of the answers until it airs.
- 1. How the ghosts talk about PeteWhether the empty spot is treated as grief, as a puzzle to solve or as a running joke. The tone will tell me where Season 6 is heading.
- 2. What Kyle is allowed to doIf he is simply Sam’s understudy, that is a missed chance. If the writers give him his own way of handling the ghosts, that is a real promotion.
- 3. How much the property line mattersIt is the rule that erased Pete. Whether the special leans on it, jokes about it or ignores it will say a lot about how seriously the show wants that thread treated.
After tonight, the next stop is the Christmas special on Dec. 10, which Paramount+ says was inspired by Die Hard, and then Season 6 at midseason in 2027.
Quick answers people are searching for
What time is the Ghosts Halloween special tonight?
It airs Thursday, Oct. 29, 2026, from 9 to 10 p.m. ET/PT on CBS, which is the 9|8c slot, so 8 p.m. Central. Both parts of “Halloween 6: The Mirror” run inside that hour.
Is the Ghosts Halloween special a new episode?
Yes. It is a new two-part, one-hour special, and it is not a rerun. Whether it counts as the first two episodes of Season 6 depends on who you ask: some outlets treat it as a de facto premiere, while another reports that Season 6 has a standard 22-episode order not counting the two holiday specials. CBS has not announced the Season 6 premiere date.
How can I stream the Ghosts Halloween special?
Paramount+ says subscribers on the Premium plan can stream new episodes live as they air on CBS, and subscribers on any plan can watch on demand starting the day after. Paramount+ lists plans from $8.99 a month. All five earlier seasons are on the service too.
Do I need to watch Season 5 before the Halloween special?
Not strictly, but it helps a lot. The special picks up a couple of months after the Season 5 finale, when Pete faded away, so his absence will mean more if you have seen it. Paramount+ says new viewers can jump in, though starting from Season 1 is best for the full arc.
What happened to Pete on Ghosts?
In the Season 5 finale, Pete wandered too far from the Woodstone property line for too long and faded away completely, according to Paramount+’s recap. How, or whether, he comes back is one of the biggest open questions heading into Season 6.
Who is Margaret on Ghosts?
Margaret, played by Maria Thayer, is Hetty’s estranged sister and a guest star in the special. Previews describe a mirror connected to her spirit, though the exact mechanics are not spelled out in CBS’s own episode description.
Is Sam in the Ghosts Halloween special?
CBS’s description says Sam is away in Australia on a project called Polar Opposites, and that Kyle (Ben Feldman) helps look after the ghosts. It does not say how much, if at all, Sam appears on screen, so I will not guess.
When does Ghosts Season 6 start, and when is the Christmas special?
Season 6 returns at midseason in early 2027 with no exact date announced. Paramount+ lists the Ghosts Christmas special for Thursday, Dec. 10, 2026, and says it was inspired by Die Hard.
