Honestly, I thought Season 13 was the curtain call. A three-season order from 2020 running out, a season built like a reunion tour, a cast list that reads like a hall of fame. That's what a farewell looks like. Then on Tuesday, FX said there's more.

This isn't a review. I read the trade reports on the renewal, Ryan Murphy's comments to The Hollywood Reporter and the show's full ratings history, then built three things you won't find in the news posts: a confirmed-versus-blank ledger, a chart of premiere-night audiences, and a table of how long the show has made people wait between seasons.

My short version: the renewal is real and it makes sense. But the line I keep coming back to isn't about Season 14 at all. It's about what Murphy says he'll never do again.

The Key Points

  • FX renewed American Horror Story for a 14th season on Oct. 20, 2026, nine days before the Season 13 finale on Thursday, Oct. 29.
  • It's the show's first renewal in almost seven years. Seasons 11, 12 and 13 were ordered together in January 2020.
  • No premiere date, cast, setting or episode count has been announced.
  • My take: the renewal is earned, but it rests on streaming, not on the old TV audience, which is a small fraction of its peak.

Is American Horror Story coming back for Season 14? Yes, and FX made it official on Oct. 20

FX announced that Murphy and Brad Falchuk's anthology will return for a 14th season, as reported by Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter. The timing is the first surprise: it came nine days before the Season 13 finale. The second is the history. The three-season pickup that covered Seasons 11, 12 and 13 dates to January 2020, so this is the show's first renewal in nearly seven years, per Laughing Place.

14the season FX just ordered
9 daysbetween the renewal and the Season 13 finale
~7 yrssince the show's last renewal, in January 2020
13episodes in Season 13, the most since Season 4 (my read of Wikipedia's table)

That 2020 order is why so many fans assumed Season 13 was the end, and the season itself played like a goodbye. It brings back Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Gabourey Sidibe, Leslie Grossman and Jessica Lange, with Joey Pollari as the new face, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Phantasmag reports that Lange has said Murphy first told her it would be the final season. Yet Attitude reports Murphy had already told THR that Season 13 wasn't the last installment and that he was developing ideas for Season 14.

02 · The Ledger

What's confirmed about American Horror Story Season 14, and what's still blank

Renewal headlines blur two very different things: what's been decided and what's just been talked about. Here's how I sort them.

Confirmed

  • FX renewed the show for Season 14 on Oct. 20, 2026.
  • The Season 13 finale airs Thursday, Oct. 29.
  • Murphy told THR he's already writing the next season.
  • Murphy has said he wants to explore an international version of the show.

Still blank

  • Premiere date.
  • Cast. Murphy said he'd like to work with the Season 13 actors again, but nobody has been named.
  • Setting and theme.
  • Episode count.
  • Whether the international idea is Season 14. Murphy himself hedged.
03 · The Numbers

Why renew now? Seven premiere nights, and the number that matters more

Here's the part I found most interesting, because it cuts against how most people frame this renewal. Take the premiere-night audiences from Wikipedia's ratings table and the show's TV story looks like a long slide. Every bar below is U.S. premiere-night viewers, in millions.

Season 1 (2011)3.18M
Season 4 (2014)6.13M
Season 8 (2018)3.08M
Season 10 (2021)0.93M
Season 11 (2022)0.38M
Season 12 (2023)0.45M
Season 13 (2026)~0.38M

Sources: Wikipedia's viewership table for Seasons 1 to 12; Season 13's roughly 378,000 same-day viewers on FX is Meaww's figure. Outlets may not measure on identical terms, so read this as a direction, not a decimal.

Season 4's premiere drew 6.13 million. Season 13's same-day audience on FX was about 378,000, which is close to NYC's premiere. By my math that's a drop of roughly 94% from the peak. The same table shows Season 4 averaging 3.85 million viewers an episode against 0.30 million for Season 12, about thirteen times more.

The other numberCBR reports AHS: 13 delivered the show's biggest streaming premiere ever, landing on Nielsen's streaming top 10 with its first episode, and Murphy's biggest launch on Hulu and Disney+.

So FX renewed a show whose broadcast audience is a sliver of what it was and whose streaming audience just hit a high. That's my read of why the order came early: American Horror Story isn't being renewed as a TV ratings hit anymore, it's being renewed as a streaming event. FX hasn't said that. It's my interpretation of the numbers.

04 · The Wait

How long is the wait for a new season? The finale-to-premiere gaps

Everyone's typing the same question, so here's the only honest data I have: how long the show has taken between a finale and the next premiere.

Finale to next premiere
Dates come from the season table on Wikipedia. The month counts are my own arithmetic.
BetweenGapNote
Season 8 to 9GapAbout 10 monthsNoteNov. 14, 2018 finale, Sept. 18, 2019 premiere.
Season 9 to 10GapAbout 21 monthsNoteSeason 10 was meant to film in March 2020 and moved to the fall because of COVID-19.
Season 10 to 11GapAbout 12 monthsNoteOct. 20, 2021 finale, Oct. 19, 2022 premiere.
Season 11 to 12GapAbout 10 monthsNoteNov. 16, 2022 finale, Sept. 20, 2023 premiere.
Season 12 to 13GapAbout 29 monthsNoteApr. 24, 2024 finale, Sept. 24, 2026 premiere. Season 13 began filming Apr. 6, 2026.

The gaps run from about ten months to nearly two and a half years. That's why I'm not going to guess a date. FX hasn't given one, and this table is the best argument against anyone who says they know.

05 · The Creator

What Ryan Murphy has said about American Horror Story Season 14

At the Season 13 premiere in New York on Sept. 23, a day before the season debuted, Murphy told THR he wants to keep making the show indefinitely and that he was already writing the next season. He had compared Season 13 to The Avengers, which is exactly how it plays: every franchise favorite in one place.

Asked whether he'd ever do another all-star season like it, his answer was one word: "Never." He added that he'd like to work with those actors again and bring some characters back, just not at this scale. In THR's renewal story he also said he wants to take the show somewhere new: "I really want this show to go international." He called it something he's maybe writing right now, then added that he doesn't know.

06 · My Take

My take: three things I'd want from American Horror Story Season 14

This is a wish list, not a prediction. Nothing here comes from FX or Murphy.

  1. A smaller table.Murphy says the all-star season won't happen again, and I agree with him. A reunion works because it's rare. Do it twice and it's a habit.
  2. Faces we haven't met.Season 1 was a family moving into a house, per Wikipedia. Nobody needed a hall of fame, just a good premise and people to care about.
  3. Place as a character. If international does mean somewhere new, the show's strongest settings were places you could feel: a Los Angeles mansion, a New Orleans academy, a hotel. That's an opinion, but I'd start with the location.
EarnedMy Verdict on the Renewal

A streaming high and a creator who's already writing are good reasons to keep going. The caution is that the broadcast audience is a small fraction of its peak, so everything rides on streaming. That's my opinion, not a forecast.

American Horror Story Season 14 questions, answered fast

Is American Horror Story ending after Season 13?

No. FX renewed it for Season 14 on Oct. 20. None of the coverage I found describes Season 14 as the last one.

When does American Horror Story Season 14 come out?

No premiere date has been announced. Coverage of the renewal says no story or cast details have been revealed either.

Who is in the Season 14 cast?

Nobody has been announced. Murphy said he would like to work with the Season 13 actors again and bring some characters back, just not at the scale of Season 13.

When is the American Horror Story: 13 finale?

Thursday, Oct. 29, 2026, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on FX, with the episode on Hulu the same night. Two episodes air Thursday, Oct. 22.

How many episodes will Season 14 have?

Not announced. Season 13 has 13, the most since Season 4. By Wikipedia's count the show had 132 episodes through Season 12, so 145 after the Season 13 finale, my arithmetic. The Hollywood Reporter says Season 14 will likely push the show past 150.

Is Season 14 set outside the U.S.?

Not confirmed. Murphy told The Hollywood Reporter he wants the show to go international and that he might be writing that idea, but he said he did not know yet.

Where can I watch American Horror Story?

On FX and Hulu in the U.S. Phantasmag reports Disney+ carries it in the UK.

Where I land

I came into this week sure the story was ending, and I'm glad to be wrong. A show that's been on since 2011 doesn't get to keep its place by accident, and the early renewal reads to me as confidence.

The most hopeful line in all of this isn't the renewal. It's "Never." A creator who can say no to the thing that just worked is usually one who still has something new to try.
