Here’s the part of this renewal I keep turning over. By Disney’s own account, Coven Academy didn’t just find an audience, it found a young one: Disney says it was the No. 1 streaming series among teens 12 to 17 over its premiere weekend. And then Disney moved quickly: a second-season order just 25 days after the premiere.

I’ve organized this piece like a school day, one class period at a time, because the show lives at a school and because a renewal story is really a pile of small facts that need sorting. Every period carries a label: confirmed, reported, my math or my opinion. That way you always know whether you’re reading Disney or me.

I’m coming in optimistic. A teen witch drama that treats its audience like they can keep up, and a studio that’s willing to try a new way of handing over the episodes, is a combination I’d like to see get a second try.

The Key Points

  • Disney announced the Season 2 renewal on Monday, Oct. 26, 2026, at Disney+ and Hulu. Freeform, where the show first aired, shared the news too.
  • Disney’s numbers: 20.3 million global hours in the first three weeks on Disney+ and Hulu, plus more than 30 million views of the first chapter on social platforms. Not announced: a release date, an episode count, a production start or which cast members return.
  • My take: the 21-chapter format is the real story. I hope Season 2 keeps it, and I hope Disney shares more than hours next time.

Is Coven Academy renewed for Season 2, and what exactly did Disney announce?

Yes. Disney announced on Monday, Oct. 26, 2026, that Coven Academy has been renewed for a second season at Disney+ and Hulu. Freeform, the channel where the show premiered, posted the news on social media and pointed people toward Season 1 on Disney+ and Hulu. The show comes from Tim Federle, who also created High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, and it follows three teenage witches and their warlock classmates at an elite boarding school in New Orleans.

There’s a small piece of backstory worth knowing. The series was first planned for Disney Channel and later landed on Freeform, according to the reporting I found. It’s rated TV-PG-V, so younger viewers can watch, and the story mixes romance, danger and a murder mystery.

P2 Period two · Attendance record Status: confirmed

What happened between the Oct. 1 premiere and the Oct. 26 renewal?

The release plan was unusual, so the order of events matters. The show didn’t drop the way a typical streaming series does. It started on a linear channel, jumped to streaming the next day and used social media as a front door. Here’s the attendance record, day by day.

  • OCT 1Thu

    Freeform premiere, 8 p.m. ET

The first of three weekly blocks on Freeform, with nine chapters on opening night, as part of the channel’s Halloween programming.

  • OCT 2Fri

    The whole season goes streaming

All 21 chapters arrive on Disney+, Hulu and Freeform On Demand, one day after the premiere.

  • OCT 8Thu

    Second Freeform block

The next group of chapters airs on Freeform for viewers following along on TV.

  • OCT 15Thu

    Final Freeform block

The season finale airs on Freeform, two weeks after the premiere.

  • OCT 26Mon

    Season 2 renewal

Disney announces the renewal and shares its three-week viewing numbers.

Count it up: Oct. 1 to Oct. 26 is 25 days. That’s the whole distance from premiere night to a second-season order, and it’s a short one.

P3 Period three · Math class Status: my math

How big is 20.3 million hours? My back-of-the-napkin math

Disney’s headline number is 20.3 million global hours on Disney+ and Hulu in the show’s first three weeks. It sounds enormous, and maybe it is, but an hour count is a hard thing to picture. So I put it on the chalkboard. Everything below is my own arithmetic on Disney’s figures, not a Disney statistic.

Chalkboard · Disney’s number, my division

20.3 million hours ÷ 21 days (the first three weeks)
≈ 0.97M a day
Season 1 runs “more than five hours,” per Tim Federle. 20.3M ÷ 5 hours
≈ 4.1M seasons, at most
5 hours ÷ 21 chapters (if the total is right at five hours)
≈ 14 min each

Read the second line carefully. If every one of those hours came from someone finishing the whole season, the number of full-season viewings would be about 4.1 million at most. Because Federle says the season runs longer than five hours, and because plenty of people watch only part of a show, the real count of finishers can’t be pinned down from this number.

The simple takeaway: just under a million hours of Coven Academy watched per day, on average, over three weeks. But an hour count isn’t an audience count, so here’s what the number leaves out.

Not a head count

Hours don’t tell you how many different people watched. One binge-watcher and several casual viewers can add up to the same total.

Not a completion rate

None of the coverage I found says how many viewers finished all 21 chapters.

Not an outside number

The hours figure comes from Disney. The teen ranking is attributed to Nielsen, but Disney is the one reporting it.

There are two more numbers in the announcement. Disney says the first chapter was posted to TikTok, Instagram and YouTube and picked up more than 30 million views there. Those are views, not hours, and at least one outlet mixed that up. And Nielsen data cited by Disney put Coven Academy at No. 1 among streaming series for teens 12 to 17 over the premiere weekend, and in the top five among all viewers ages 2 and up, based on views. SFFGazette also reports that half of the teens who watched did so with an adult, and nearly two-thirds of kids 6 to 11 did too. I’d treat that last stat as a single-source detail, but it fits a show rated TV-PG-V.

Who is in the Coven Academy cast, and who is confirmed for Season 2?

Here’s the Season 1 roll call as reported around the renewal. One caution before you read it: Disney’s renewal announcement didn’t say who is coming back, so every seat below carries an honest question mark for Season 2. HollywoodLife says the main cast is expected to return, but that’s the outlet’s expectation, not a Disney confirmation.

Federle has said the show is a love letter to the supernatural teen stories he grew up on, and he’s named Charmed, The Craft, Hocus Pocus and Dawson’s Creek among them. You can feel that in the casting, which pairs fresh faces with grown-ups who have real history in this kind of story.

P5 Period five · Media studies Status: mixed

Why 21 short chapters, and did the release plan work?

Strip away the witches and the real experiment here is the delivery. Season 1 isn’t ten hour-long episodes. It’s 21 “chapters,” and Federle has said the whole thing adds up to a little over five hours. By my math that’s roughly 14 minutes a chapter. Disney paired that format with a three-step release.

Freeform, in weekly blocks

The show premiered on Oct. 1 as part of Freeform’s Halloween lineup, with more chapters on Oct. 8 and the finale on Oct. 15.

Streaming, all at once

The full season hit Disney+ and Hulu on Oct. 2, so anyone could binge the whole thing the day after the premiere.

Social, as the front door

The first chapter was posted to TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, where Disney says it got more than 30 million views.

Did it work? Disney clearly thinks so, and its numbers back a renewal. What I can say with more confidence is that the format fits its audience. Short chapters are easy to share, and posting the first one gave social platforms a real piece of the story rather than a trailer. That’s the part of the plan I find smart rather than gimmicky.

The part I’m watching is what happens next. The TV Cave noted that whether Disney keeps this approach for Season 2 “remains to be seen,” and I agree that’s the open question. The chapter format is what makes this show stand out. I’d hate to see it traded for a conventional episode order just because that’s the familiar shape.

P6 Period six · Hall pass Status: confirmed

What do we know about Coven Academy Season 2? The hall pass

Renewal stories tempt everyone to fill in blanks. So here’s the clean split, based only on what has been announced.

Cleared to pass · confirmed

  • Disney renewed the show for Season 2 on Oct. 26, 2026, at Disney+ and Hulu.
  • Season 1 drew 20.3 million global hours on Disney+ and Hulu in its first three weeks, per Disney.
  • The first chapter drew more than 30 million views on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, per Disney.
  • All 21 Season 1 chapters are streaming on Disney+, Hulu and Freeform On Demand.
  • Tim Federle created the show and executive produced Season 1.

Still in the hallway · not announced

  • A Season 2 premiere date, or any release window.
  • How many chapters or episodes Season 2 will have.
  • When production starts.
  • Which cast members are returning.
  • Whether Season 2 will air on Freeform first, the way Season 1 did.

One more thing sits in a gray zone. In an interview with Variety, as SFFGazette reports it, Federle said he doesn’t want to tell another straight mother-and-daughter mystery, but he sees something interesting in what makes a mother and daughter dangerous together. That’s a creator’s thinking out loud, not an announced plot. I find it encouraging anyway, because it suggests he’s asking what the second season should say instead of repeating the first.

P7 Period seven · Report card Status: opinion

My report card for the renewal

These grades are my opinion of the renewal as a business and storytelling move. They aren’t a grade for the episodes, which this piece doesn’t review.

A

Speed of the decision

Twenty-five days from premiere to renewal, with the first three weeks of data in hand. That’s decisive.

B−

Transparency of the numbers

Disney shared hours, social views and a Nielsen teen ranking. It didn’t share how many people watched or how many finished, and every figure arrives through Disney’s own announcement.

A−

The format bet

Short chapters gave Disney a way to put a real piece of the story on social platforms. If the renewal is any sign, the bet paid off. The minus is for the risk that Season 2 plays it safer.

Inc.

What fans know about Season 2

An incomplete, for now. No date, no cast confirmations and no episode count means there’s not enough on paper to grade.

P8 Period eight · Office hours Status: confirmed

P9 Dismissal · My verdict Status: opinion

Should you start Coven Academy before Season 2? Dismissal

This is a verdict on the starting line, not a review of the episodes.

Start now ifyou want to catch up while a show is still fresh. At a little over five hours total, the whole of Season 1 is a weekend, not a commitment.
Wait ifyou’d rather hear how the first season lands for people you trust. Nothing about Season 2 is scheduled, so there’s no clock running.
Skip it ifteen supernatural romance isn’t your thing. Nothing in the renewal coverage suggests the show leaves that lane.

My verdict: the numbers earned a second class period, but the format earned the applause. Keep the short chapters, keep the strange release plan and let the show keep surprising its audience.
