Four days. That's how long until The Diplomat is back, and Netflix is doing the thing I wish it did more often: all eight episodes at once, on Thursday, Oct. 15. No weekly drip, no waiting a seven-day stretch to find out whether Kate Wyler's marriage survives a stolen nuclear weapon.

I haven't seen a minute of Season 4 and couldn't find a published review, so this is a catch-up guide, not a critique: where Season 3 actually ended, where every major character stands, what Netflix has said about the new season, and whether a rewatch is needed first.

Most people describe this show as a thriller about a missing weapon. My reading is that it's about two marriages, and the weapon is just what they're fighting over. Season 4's synopsis, as Deadline and TVLine published it, seems to back that up. Below I build a scorecard of my own for those marriages.

The Key Points

  • Season 4 premieres Thursday, Oct. 15, on Netflix, with all eight episodes together. Season 3 landed on Oct. 16, 2025, almost exactly one year earlier.
  • Allison Janney, Bradley Whitford and Nana Mensah are now series regulars. Janney won the Emmy for supporting actress in a drama series on Sept. 14 for playing President Grace Penn in Season 3.
  • My take: the weapon is the plot, the marriages are the story. If you remember the Season 3 finale, you don't need to rewatch anything.
File 01 · The Date

When does The Diplomat Season 4 come out on Netflix, and how many episodes are there?

It arrives Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026, on Netflix. TVLine reports all eight episodes drop at once, and The Hollywood Reporter describes the season as eight one-hour episodes. Netflix announced the date on Aug. 17 with a teaser, almost exactly a year after Season 3 premiered on Oct. 16, 2025.

That one-year gap is a quiet good-news story. Seasons 1 and 2 were about a year and a half apart, with Season 1 on April 20, 2023 and Season 2 on Oct. 31, 2024. Netflix also renewed the show for a fourth season in May 2025, months before Season 3 even premiered. A streamer doesn't do that for a show it's unsure about.

File 02 · The Recap

What happened at the end of The Diplomat Season 3? A spoiler-labeled recap

Spoiler warningThis section spoils the ending of Season 3 and the main turns of Seasons 1 and 2. If you haven't watched, skip ahead to the rewatch guide.
  1. The president dies. Season 2 ends with Grace Penn, until then the vice president, taking the top job. Netflix's own description of Season 3 adds that Hal may have inadvertently caused the president's death.
  2. Grace picks Hal, not Kate. At the close of the Season 3 premiere, the new president offers the vice presidency to Hal, according to Netflix's Tudum. Per Netflix's Tudum, the Wylers were posted to London in the first place to give Kate a clear path to that job, so she is the one passed over.
  3. The marriage cracks. Kate's relationship with MI6 agent Callum Ellis, played by Aidan Turner, is the clearest sign of how far apart she and Hal have drifted.
  4. A Russian submarine, a nuclear weapon, and a plan. In the finale, Penn flies to meet U.K. Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge. Kate's idea is to photograph the submarine to prove what is on board. Hal helps get Penn behind it. Kate then talks Trowbridge into burying the sub in concrete, and he and Penn shake on it.
  5. Kate asks Hal to take her back. She apologizes, he tells her he's still there, and they kiss. It looks like the marriage is saved.
  6. Then the floor drops. Callum tells Kate the weapon is no longer aboard the sub. She works out that Hal and Penn took it the night before, and that the "drone" Penn described was a submarine. Hal's answer is "You will tell no one," and he goes to tell Penn that Kate has figured it out.

Here is what I keep noticing about that finale. The order of events is the cruelest part. Kate begs for forgiveness first, gets it, and only then finds out she's been lied to. The show lets her feel relief for a few scenes so the drop lands harder. A weaker thriller would have revealed the theft first and let the marriage scene play as tragedy. This one makes the marriage scene the setup. That's the choice that tells me what the show cares about.

File 03 · The Board

Who is in The Diplomat Season 4, and where does every major character stand?

The attention around the show is real right now, and part of it is the Emmys. On Sept. 14, Allison Janney won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for Season 3, her eighth acting Emmy, which ties the all-time record according to Variety and Netflix. TVLine counts seven Emmy nominations for Season 3, including best drama series and acting nods for Russell, Sewell, Janney and Whitford. I also covered the night itself in my Emmys story.

Here is where each major character stands going in. The "Season 4" line sticks to what Netflix and the trades have said.

Kate WylerKeri Russell · U.S. ambassador to the U.K.

Where we left themTook Hal back, then worked out what he and Penn had done behind her back.

Season 4Netflix says one catastrophic moment breaks the fragile peace she built between the U.S. and the U.K., along with the marriage she is trying to save.

Hal WylerRufus Sewell · Vice President

Where we left themTold Kate to stay silent about the weapon, then told Penn she knew.

Season 4He and Penn are the pair behind the plot that, per the synopsis, pushes the U.S. toward war.

Grace PennAllison Janney · President

Where we left themSat across from Trowbridge having already agreed with Hal to take the weapon.

Season 4Now a series regular. Janney's Emmy for the role came on Sept. 14.

Todd PennBradley Whitford · First Gentleman

Where we left themAsked Kate whether she minded how productive Hal and Grace's working relationship had become.

Season 4Now a series regular. The synopsis has him and Kate, an uneasy pair at best, teaming up against the Grace and Hal alliance.

Billie AppiahNana Mensah · White House Chief of Staff

Where we left themPart of the Penn administration inner circle.

Season 4Promoted to series regular for Season 4, according to Netflix's Tudum.

Nicol TrowbridgeRory Kinnear · U.K. Prime Minister

Where we left themAgreed to bury the Russian sub in concrete. According to TVLine, he knows nothing about the taking of the weapon.

Season 4Listed among the returning cast.

Austin DennisonDavid Gyasi · U.K. Foreign Secretary

Where we left themShowed up at the finale summit with a new wife and shared a warm fireside moment with Kate.

Season 4What's on Netflix lists him among the returning core cast.

Callum EllisAidan Turner · MI6 agent

Where we left themTold Kate the weapon was no longer on the submarine.

Season 4I couldn't find a confirmation that he returns. What's on Netflix says it expects more of him but notes that it isn't confirmed.

TVLine also lists Ato Essandoh and Ali Ahn in the returning supporting cast.

File 04 · The Ledger

What is The Diplomat Season 4 about? Netflix's synopsis and my scorecard for the two marriages

Netflix's official synopsis, as published by Deadline and TVLine, says two marriages threaten to consume each other. One catastrophic moment breaks the peace Kate built between the U.S. and the U.K., and it breaks the marriage she's trying to save at the same time. Meanwhile Penn and Hal's plot to take Russia's most powerful weapon pushes the U.S. toward war, and Kate and Todd, who are at best an uneasy pair, join forces to stop it.

In the teaser, Kate tells Hal she isn't trying to get out of the marriage, she's trying to get back in. I find that line more disarming than any threat about a missile. So here's my own ledger of the show's two marriages, built from what's on the record. Nobody else is publishing this exact breakdown, and it's the lens I'm bringing to Season 4.

What holds it together
Kate and HalA long history and a shared career track. Hal spent Season 3 campaigning to make Kate vice president, per Netflix's description.
Grace and ToddA political partnership. Todd's own career was derailed by financial wrongdoing, according to a Season 3 review by Susan Granger.
My readBoth couples run on ambition first and romance second. That's why the betrayals feel like career betrayals, and why they hurt more.
The secret each is keeping
Kate and HalHal hid his plan with Grace. Kate had her relationship with Callum, and apologized for it.
Grace and ToddTodd noticed how close Grace and Hal had become, and he wasn't comfortable with it.
My readKate and Hal each hold something against the other. That kind of mutual leverage is what makes a reconciliation fragile.
The kind of betrayal
Kate and HalDebora Cahn calls what Kate faces a "much, much, much bigger betrayal," and What's on Netflix frames it as intellectual rather than romantic.
Grace and ToddCloser to jealousy and exclusion, from what the finale showed.
My readThat framing is the one I find most interesting. Kate can forgive a person. It's harder to forgive a partnership she was shut out of.
Who knows what
Kate and HalKate knows the weapon was taken. Hal knows she knows.
Grace and ToddGrace knows too. Whether Todd learns the full story is unclear from what has been released.
My readThe synopsis puts Kate and Todd on the same side, which means someone has to tell someone something. Who talks first is the thing to watch.

Three questions I'm carrying into Thursday. These are questions, not predictions:

  1. Who does Kate tell, if anyone? Hal told her to tell no one. Everything in the logline suggests that instruction doesn't last.
  2. Does Todd become an ally or a liability? Whitford's promotion to series regular says the show wants more of him.
  3. Can anyone on this show be honest for more than one scene? That's the real test for me, and it's the one that decides whether Season 4 feels human.
File 05 · The Rewatch Guide

Do you need to rewatch The Diplomat Seasons 1 to 3 before Season 4? My guide by how long it's been

Seasons 1 to 3 are all on Netflix. Whether you need to go back depends on you, so here's my guide by how long it's been:

You watched Season 3 last fall and remember the ending

You're set. Read the recap above and you have what Season 4 leans on: the sub, the weapon, and Hal telling Kate to stay quiet.

Skip the rewatch

You remember the finale but not why Hal and Grace are so close

Watch the Season 3 premiere, where Hal is offered the vice presidency, and the Season 3 finale. Those two episodes carry the relationship Season 4 is built on.

Two episodes

You stopped after Season 2

Watch Season 3, all eight episodes. Grace is president, Hal is vice president and Kate's marriage is in a very different place. Season 4 assumes you know all of it.

Season 3

You've never watched the show

Start at Season 1. Season 4 is built on three seasons of history, and a newcomer could follow the synopsis but would miss the weight. Since Season 4 drops all at once, you can binge your way up to it.

Start at Season 1
File 06 · The Numbers

How big is The Diplomat on Netflix? Seasons 1 to 3 by the numbers

What's on Netflix compiled Netflix's own engagement data for the show. Netflix counts a "view" as hours watched divided by runtime. Here is each season's cumulative total through its first three weeks on the service:

22.9MSeason 1 views, first three weeks
14.8MSeason 2 views, first three weeks
14.3MSeason 3 views, first three weeks

Season 3 spent three weeks in Netflix's global top 10s, which is why the comparison stops at week three. The same compilation puts the whole series at 126.4 million views, or 783.8 million viewing hours, between 2023 and mid-2026. My read: Season 1 was the big launch, and Seasons 2 and 3 settled at almost the same level. To me that looks like a steady audience, not a fading one. It's the profile of a show people return to, and it fits a streamer that renewed Season 4 before Season 3 even aired.

File 07 · The Episodes

The Diplomat Season 4 episode titles and who wrote each episode

What's on Netflix confirmed the eight Season 4 titles and the writing credits. The titles below are listed alphabetically because I couldn't find an official running order. The writers are listed by episode number, since that's how the credits were reported.

The titles (A to Z)
  • Pagliacci
  • Phony Negroni
  • Redcoats
  • Special Envoy
  • The Dead
  • The Typo
  • Warships
  • Windsor
Writers by episode
  • 1: Debora Cahn, from a story co-written with Anna Adele Hagen
  • 2: Debora Cahn
  • 3: Jessica Brickman
  • 4: Peter R. Noah
  • 5: Eli G. Attie
  • 6: Julianna Dudley Meagher
  • 7: Anna Adele Hagen
  • 8: Debora Cahn

One detail I like: Cahn wrote the opener, episode 2 and the finale herself. When a creator keeps both ends of a season, it usually means she wants control of how it starts and how it lands. It's a small thing, but it's the kind of small thing that makes me more comfortable.

File 08 · The Verdict

Should you watch The Diplomat Season 4? My honest take

Short of watching it, the best I can do is say who I think this season is for, based on what's been shown and said.

Watch it if
  • You want a political thriller where the loudest scenes are two people talking in a room
  • You loved how Season 3 ended and want to see the fallout right away
  • You like to binge, since all eight episodes arrive together
Pause first if
  • You haven't seen Seasons 1 to 3, because this season leans on all of that history
  • You want reviews first, which is fair, since none exist yet
  • You'd rather the show stay mostly about diplomacy and not about marriage

My Quick Take

I'm excited and a little nervous, which is a good place to be. Excited, because the setup is the best kind of trap: a marriage and a war with the same secret at the center. Nervous, because Season 4 now has four leads who all have something to hide, and the show only works if it lets at least one of them be honest. I'd take a messy, human season over a flawless geopolitical one.
