Here's a sentence I didn't expect to write in 2026: a horror sequel that cost about $250,000 to make is part of a Halloween weekend at a national theater chain. That's Variety's figure for Terrifier 2, and it's the reason this week's re-release news is more interesting than a normal "back in theaters" announcement.

Variety reported on Thursday that Terrifier, Terrifier 2 and Terrifier 3 will play at Regal on Oct. 29, 30 and 31, with the video game Dead by Daylight presenting the run. That's the news. What follows is what I'd want a friend to tell me before I bought a ticket: which night is which, how long I'd be sitting there, what the sponsor perk really is, and where the reports don't agree with each other.

A quick word on what this is. These are graphic, adults-only horror films, and I'm keeping any description of what's on screen short on purpose. This is a planning guide with my opinions mixed in, not a review, and where reports conflict I'll say so instead of picking the tidier version.

The Key Points

  • The Terrifier trilogy returns to theaters Oct. 29-31, 2026, presented by Dead by Daylight, per Variety. Bloody Disgusting and Rue Morgue report one film per night: Terrifier on Oct. 29, Terrifier 2 on Oct. 30 and Terrifier 3 on Oct. 31.
  • The runtimes are about 85, 138 and 125 minutes, which is 5 hours 48 minutes of film across all three nights by my math. Reports differ on whether the run is nationwide at Regal or in select theaters, so your local listing is the only source that counts.
  • My take: start with Night 1, and don't make Terrifier 3 your first Terrifier on Halloween night. The best argument against me is real, though: Night 3 is the only one that lands on a Saturday.
No. 01The News

What is happening with the Terrifier movies in theaters this Halloween?

The announcement landed Thursday, Oct. 22. Variety says all three films, 2016's Terrifier, 2022's Terrifier 2 and 2024's Terrifier 3, will have showtimes at Regal theaters on Halloween weekend, Oct. 29 through 31. The run is presented by the video game Dead by Daylight and its developer Behaviour Interactive, with support from distributors Cineverse and Epic Pictures. Writer and director Damien Leone made all three, and David Howard Thornton plays Art the Clown in each.

Here's the part most headlines skip: the reports don't fully agree on scale. Variety's wording is Regal theaters nationwide. Bloody Disgusting says select theaters. Rue Morgue says it couldn't confirm whether the screenings are nationwide or limited to certain markets, and notes that exact locations weren't spelled out in the initial reports. I couldn't find a theater list anywhere. So I'd treat "nationwide" as the reported intent and your local Regal page as the only thing that settles it.

The one-film-per-night order comes from Bloody Disgusting and Rue Morgue, in release order. The excerpts of Variety's story that I read give the three-day window without breaking it down by film.

3films, one per night, per Bloody Disgusting and Rue Morgue
348minutes of film across all three, by my math (5 hours 48 minutes)
6days from Oct. 23 to Night 1 on Oct. 29, by my count
No. 02Three Nights

Which Terrifier movie plays which night, and what is each one?

Think of it as three tickets with three different personalities. Here's how I'd describe each, using what the reporting says.

Night 1Thu, Oct. 29

Terrifier (2016)

About 85 min · Set on Halloween night

The first feature built around Art the Clown, and the first with Thornton in the role. Art had already appeared in Leone's earlier short films and the 2013 anthology All Hallows' Eve.

My one-liner: the fair starting line, and the shortest ticket.

Night 2Fri, Oct. 30

Terrifier 2 (2022)

138 min · Set on Halloween night

Lauren LaVera joins as Sienna Shaw, the series' protagonist. Variety says it made $16.8 million worldwide on a $250,000 budget.

My one-liner: the biggest commitment of the three.

Night 3Sat, Oct. 31

Terrifier 3 (2024)

125 min · Set around Christmas Eve

Picks up with Sienna and her brother after the Halloween events. Variety reports more than $90 million worldwide on a $2 million budget, and Dexerto says it opened to $18.9 million in the U.S. and took the top spot from Joker: Folie à Deux.

My one-liner: a Christmas movie on Halloween night.

That last point made me smile. The first two films are set on Halloween, but the film playing on Halloween night is the one set at Christmas. Bloody Disgusting noticed the same thing. The booking calendar and the story calendar just don't line up, and I think that's kind of charming.

No. 03Runtimes

How long are Terrifier, Terrifier 2 and Terrifier 3? Runtime math for planning your night

Nobody puts runtime in a headline, and it's the thing that decides whether you're still glad you came at minute 120. Here are the three, drawn to scale against the longest.

Terrifier (2016)~85 min

A short, simple slasher by modern standards. One source lists it at 86 minutes, so I'm calling it about 85.

Terrifier 2 (2022)138 min

2 hours 18 minutes. The longest film of the three, and a big ask for a weeknight.

Terrifier 3 (2024)125 min

2 hours 5 minutes. Shorter than Terrifier 2, still well past the usual slasher length.

The length is a deliberate choice, not an accident. Leone has said the big set pieces with Art are what make these films unorthodox, and that the runtime gets criticized unfairly. He also told Coming Soon that his first cut of Terrifier 3 ran around two hours and twenty minutes, and that he trimmed five or six scenes because he didn't want to repeat Terrifier 2's length. Reactions to the length split, too: a JoBlo writer called Terrifier 2's running time painfully excessive while noting plenty of viewers didn't mind.

My math: the gap between Night 1 and Night 2 is 53 minutes, which is the biggest swing in the whole trilogy. Theaters also run previews before the feature, and I'm not counting those. To me, runtime is the real ticket price here, and it's worth deciding on it before you decide on anything else.

No. 04The Money

How did a $250,000 Terrifier sequel become a theatrical event? The return-on-budget math

Variety's numbers are the clearest way into this. Terrifier 2 made $16.8 million worldwide on a $250,000 budget. Terrifier 3 made more than $90 million worldwide on a $2 million budget. I divided one by the other so you can see the shape of it.

Terrifier 2: $16.8M gross on $250K~67x

$16.8 million divided by $250,000 is about 67 times the budget.

Terrifier 3: $90M+ gross on $2M45x+

$90 million divided by $2 million is 45, and the gross is reported as more than that, so at least 45 times.

Two caveats I'd rather say out loud. A gross isn't a profit: theaters keep a share, and marketing isn't in the budget number. And the multiple actually went down from the second film to the third even as the checks got bigger. The budget grew eightfold while the worldwide gross grew about 5.4 times. I read that as a franchise growing up, not a warning sign, but that's my interpretation.

How it got here is the other half of the story. Dexerto reports that the first film's small fanbase raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to help make Terrifier 2. Bloody Disgusting adds that the first movie found its audience through streaming, which earned Terrifier 2 a limited theatrical release and then gave Terrifier 3 a wider one. A re-release like this one is what that chain of fans paying for more of something looks like from the outside. If you want the bigger picture of 2026's low-budget horror wave, I wrote about it in my Why Is Horror Winning in 2026 piece.

No. 05The Game

What does the Dead by Daylight tie-in actually get you?

Three things are reported, and only one of them is guaranteed to exist for you.

  • The drawing

Ticketholders for any of the three films are entered into a drawing to win a Dead by Daylight download code, per Variety. That's a chance, not a prize.

  • The code

Regal Crown Club members who buy tickets receive a code for an in-game cosmetic: Art's retro flower sunglasses, per Variety.

  • The game

Art the Clown is joining Dead by Daylight in November as a licensed character, according to Rue Morgue, which also says a public test build is reportedly set to begin Oct. 27.

I couldn't find how many codes there are, the drawing rules, or an entry deadline, so check Regal's page for those. My honest opinion: a drawing is a lottery ticket and a cosmetic is a hat. I wouldn't let either one decide my night. But I do think it's smart marketing. A game company is paying to put its newest killer in front of horror fans on the exact weekend they're in the mood.

No. 06My Take

Which Terrifier night should you pick? My take

Start at the beginning, and never let Halloween night be your first Terrifier.

Here's my reasoning, and it's an opinion built on runtimes and reporting, not a review. The films build on each other. The synopsis for Terrifier 3 starts with Sienna and her brother trying to rebuild after surviving Art's Halloween massacre, so it assumes you've met them. Walking into Night 3 cold means sitting through two hours of a story already in progress. And Night 1 is the shortest ticket of the three, so it's the cheapest way to find out whether this series is for you at all.

I haven't ranked the films by quality, and I don't think I should: critics disagree. One ranking I read calls Terrifier 3 better paced and tighter than Terrifier 2, and another writer thinks Terrifier 2 overstays its welcome. Those are two people's opinions. What I can score honestly is the planning side, so here's my planner card for someone who hasn't seen the series. These scores are mine, they're about logistics, and they say nothing about which film is better.

Terrifier (Night 1, Thursday)

Easy on the clock●●●●●
Works as a first Terrifier●●●●●
Halloween-night mood●●●●●
Easy to attend●●●○○

Terrifier 2 (Night 2, Friday)

Easy on the clock●●○○○
Works as a first Terrifier●●○○○
Halloween-night mood●●●●●
Easy to attend●●●●○

Terrifier 3 (Night 3, Saturday)

Easy on the clock●●●○○
Works as a first Terrifier●○○○○
Halloween-night mood●●○○○
Easy to attend●●●●●

And here's how I'd match it to you:

  • You've never seen any of themNight 1, and decide after. It's the shortest ticket, and nothing else makes sense without it.
  • You've seen Terrifier but not the sequelNight 2 is the bridge. If you skip it, Night 3 is built on a story you haven't followed.
  • You know the whole seriesNight 3. It's the shorter of the two sequels, it's the Saturday, and it's the one on Halloween itself.
  • Gore isn't for youSkip all three, and don't let anyone make you feel bad about it. The BBFC gave Terrifier 3 an 18 in the U.K. for strong gory violence and injury detail, and these are adult films.
The best argument against meNight 3 is the only night on a Saturday, and it's the screening that falls on Halloween itself. If you're bringing a group for the night out rather than the continuity, that probably wins, and a ticket on Saturday is easier to organize than one on Thursday. I'd just warn your friends that they're walking into a Christmas-set sequel and that they missed two films.
No. 07Checklist

Before you buy a ticket: my five-point Terrifier checklist

  • Confirm your theater. Reports differ on whether this is nationwide at Regal or select locations, and I found no theater list.
  • Confirm the film for the night. The one-per-night order is reported by Bloody Disgusting and Rue Morgue, so check the showtime says what you expect.
  • Check the age and the content. These are gory adult horror films. The BBFC rated Terrifier 3 an 18 in the U.K., and one critic reports it opened in the U.S. without an age rating. I couldn't confirm the U.S. ratings for the other two.
  • Do the time math. Runtimes are about 85, 138 and 125 minutes, and previews come on top.
  • Treat the game perks as a bonus. The code goes to Crown Club members who buy tickets, and the drawing is a chance, not a prize.

ABOUT THIS STORY

Independently reported and written for this story. The news of the re-release, the studio support, the sponsor perks and the box office and budget figures for Terrifier 2 and 3 come from Variety's Oct. 22 report. The one-film-per-night order, the "select theaters" wording, the Dead by Daylight character details and the Terrifier 4 report come from Bloody Disgusting and Rue Morgue. Runtimes come from JoBlo, /Film and a Terrifier retrospective, Leone's comments on length from a Coming Soon interview as carried by Gamereactor and JoBlo, the Terrifier 3 opening figure from Dexerto, the BBFC rating from the Yorkshire Evening Post and the U.S. rating note from Express Elevator to Hell. I read several of these as search excerpts rather than the full text, and I couldn't find a theater list or Regal's own listing. The 348-minute total, the 67x and 45x multiples, the 8x and 5.4x comparisons, the day count, the planner scores and the pick-by-situation guide are my own. This is not a review.

Our Read: Gustavo Henrique

What I keep coming back to is the chain of people. A tiny film found a few viewers who wanted more of it. Those viewers helped pay for a sequel. The sequel found more viewers, and now a national theater chain is putting all three films on screens in the same weekend. Whatever you think of the films themselves, and I'm not pretending they're for everyone, that's a rare and kind of hopeful path for something that started this small.

If you go, I'd go in order and I'd go with people you trust to sit through two hours with. And if you don't go, there's nothing wrong with sitting this one out and enjoying Halloween your own way.
