Most companies dig in. That's the pattern I've gotten used to: something unpopular gets announced, the community pushes back, and the studio spends the next few weeks insisting it just needs to explain itself better. Jagex did the opposite. It revealed RuneScape Reignited at RuneFest on Oct. 3, and by Oct. 15 the whole thing was cancelled.

Here's what this piece is. I read Jagex's own posts as the RuneScape Wiki lists them, then went through the reporting from GamesRadar, TechPowerUp, CGMag, Insider Gaming, Kotaku and others, and lined up the dates. Where outlets disagree on something small, like whether it was 11 days or 12, I say so. The opinions are mine, and I mark them.

My short version: Jagex was right to cancel, and the speed is the part I admire most. But the thing that made Reignited tempting in the first place, a RuneScape that's hard to walk into in 2026, is still sitting right where it was.

The Key Points

  • Jagex revealed RuneScape Reignited on Oct. 3, 2026 and cancelled it on Oct. 15. It was a new character type with its own economy and a separate membership, planned for Dec. 2.
  • Veterans worried it would split the player base. Jagex responded on Oct. 6, floated changes on Oct. 9, then said it had "missed the mark."
  • Dec. 2 still happens: the Adventure Guide, the first Remastered Journey update and a 10-day free members trial from Dec. 2 to Dec. 12.
  • My take: cancelling was the right call. The new-player problem Reignited tried to solve is still open, and I'd have asked veterans before announcing a date.
01The Clock

How fast did Jagex cancel RuneScape Reignited? Twelve days from reveal to reversal

Count it out: Oct. 3 to Oct. 15 is 12 days. Plenty of headlines say "two weeks" or "less than two weeks," and a couple of outlets say 11 days or date the cancellation Oct. 16, probably because of time zones and how they count. I'm going with the dates on Jagex's own news posts, as the RuneScape Wiki lists them.

12 daysfrom the RuneFest reveal on Oct. 3 to the cancellation on Oct. 15
Dec. 2the planned Reignited launch, and still the date of Jagex's Adventure Guide update
3 postsfrom Jagex after the reveal: Oct. 6, Oct. 9 and Oct. 15
10 daysof free members access, Dec. 2 to Dec. 12, for eligible characters

Either way you count it, that's quick. RuneScape is a 25-year-old MMO with a community that has strong feelings about its own history, and a studio that reverses a headline project in under two weeks is a studio that was watching the reaction in real time.

02The Idea

What was RuneScape Reignited, and why did veterans read it as a split?

Jagex pitched Reignited as a new "character type": a way to play RuneScape from a shared starting line, almost as if the game were launching today, according to the announcement as Aftermath reported it. New players and returning players would begin together, with a clean economy and a fresh leaderboard. In Jagex's own terms, everyone who already had a character was a "Veteran."

Here's how the two kinds of characters would have differed, based on the RuneScape Wiki's summary of the announcement and TechPowerUp's reporting:

Economy

Reignited characterIts own Grand Exchange, with offers only from other Reignited players
Existing (veteran) characterThe existing Grand Exchange

Trading and bosses

Reignited characterNo trading with veterans and no shared boss encounters
Existing (veteran) characterSame as before, with other veterans

Membership

Reignited characterA separate membership
Existing (veteran) characterYour current membership

Where you play

Reignited characterAny world next to veterans, plus Reignited-only worlds
Existing (veteran) characterAny existing world

Rankings

Reignited characterIts own HiScores, with statues in a new Hall of Legends for first-to-do feats
Existing (veteran) characterThe existing HiScores

Moving an existing account over

Reignited characterNot possible at the reveal, much like Ironman accounts. Jagex said that was subject to change
Existing (veteran) characterNot applicable

Source for the table: RuneScape Wiki, TechPowerUp and Kotaku. It describes the plan as announced on Oct. 3, before any of the changes Jagex floated later.

Read that table from a veteran's seat and you can see the problem in about ten seconds. The new thing gets its own economy and its own rankings, you can't bring what you've built, and the people you've played with for years can't trade with or fight bosses alongside the newcomers. Plenty of players said on social media that it would split the community, and some started protesting in-game, per the Wiki.

Why would Jagex try it anyway? Because it has a real problem. TechPowerUp reports Jagex said earlier this month that RuneScape still has hundreds of thousands of members but has been in a slight decline for a long time. GamesRadar adds that Old School RuneScape attracts many more players, and that new CEO Jon Bellamy has been pushing to clean the game up and close that gap.

That context matters, because it tells me Reignited wasn't a random stunt. It was a swing at something that needs fixing. I just think it swung from the wrong direction.

04The Statement

What did Jagex say when it cancelled RuneScape Reignited?

The statement is short and, to my ear, unusually plain. Mod Ryan said it was clear the studio "missed the mark" and wouldn't move forward. He framed the goal as growing RuneScape again with returning and new players, but never at the expense of the existing community, and he apologized to people who'd been looking forward to a fresh start.

"The last time we didn't listen to player feedback, combat changed forever."Mod Ryan, RuneScape, Oct. 15, 2026, as reported by GamesRadar

If that line doesn't ring a bell, it's a reference to the Evolution of Combat update, which arrived in November 2012 and overhauled how fighting worked. GamesRadar notes that many players quit over it, and that the fallout is a big reason there are now two games: RuneScape 3, and Old School RuneScape, which revived the version people had before the change.

Reaction to the cancellation has been mixed in a healthy way. GamesRadar describes the early response as positive overall but not universal: some players are disappointed to miss a day-one boom, while many veterans praised Jagex for acting quickly. Jagex also said the Reignited debate overshadowed its 2027 roadmap, which it says is going ahead.

I'll say what I felt reading it, and it's not cynicism. I felt a little hopeful. Companies rarely point at their own old scars when they cancel something. This one did, in public, within two weeks.

05Dec. 2

What still launches Dec. 2, and who gets the RuneScape free trial?

Jagex says the Dec. 2 date stays. On that day it plans to release the Adventure Guide, which the RuneScape Wiki describes as an optional guidance system for players at every stage of progression, and the first Remastered Journey update, which focuses on the early-game experience. Jagex also mentions "a host of other improvements," some of them things players have been asking for. Its stated plan is to remaster the whole player journey through 2027.

The free access window also survived. Before the cancellation it was part of the Reignited pitch, with Reignited access open without membership from Dec. 2 to Dec. 12. Now it's a 10-day free trial of RuneScape members worlds and content, running Dec. 2 to Dec. 12, with the terms saying exact timings are still to be confirmed.

The eligibility rule, as Jagex put it: new characters, or any character that on Dec. 2 hasn't been in membership since June 2, can freely access members worlds and content during the window. Here's how that sorts out for different players:

You've never played RuneScape

A brand-new character is covered by the offer, so the free window is aimed squarely at you.

Covered

You played years ago and left

If your character has had no membership since June 2 as of Dec. 2, it fits Jagex's wording. Check the offer terms for exact timings before planning around it.

Likely covered

You're a member now, or were recently

Jagex's wording points at characters with no membership since June 2, so this trial isn't really aimed at current or recent members. Read the terms to be sure.

Probably not

You play Old School RuneScape

Jagex's terms for the free access period say it does not apply to Old School RuneScape.

Not included

One more thing from the coverage worth knowing: Insider Gaming reports Ryan said there will be no split worlds. Whatever you think of the cancellation, the Dec. 2 experience is the existing RuneScape, with a friendlier front door.

The 2027 roadmap is separate from all this. KitGuru reports it includes new bosses, raids, a new zone and new quests, and CGMag notes it includes a rework of the Agility skill and the closing of long-running storylines. Jagex says Reignited's cancellation doesn't change it.

06The Opinion

My take: a three-question check for any MMO that wants to start over

Reignited got me thinking about what I'd ask of any "fresh start" for a long-running online game. I ended up with three questions, and I ran Reignited through them as announced on Oct. 3. This is my own framework, not Jagex's and not anyone else's.

Question 1

Can the people who built this world come along?

At the reveal, an existing account could not become a Reignited character, though Jagex said that was subject to change.

Failed at reveal
Question 2

Does it ask for a second subscription?

Reignited needed a separate membership, and GamesRadar notes players complained about paying again for a new account. Jagex said on Oct. 9 it would explore using an existing account and membership.

Failed at reveal
Question 3

Do veterans get something to gain, not just something to keep?

The Oct. 9 list added veteran-only rewards like a cosmetic max cape variant. It came after the backlash had already started, which is why I call it partial.

Partial
My read in one breath

Right problem, wrong order. Ask the people who'll live in the world first, announce a date second. Jagex did the asking, just after the announcement instead of before it.

I don't want to pile on, because I think the instinct behind Reignited was decent. A fresh economy where first-to-do feats still mean something is a genuinely fun idea. Jagex even ran a temporary Fresh Start Worlds mode back in 2022, per the RuneScape Wiki, so this wasn't invented out of thin air. The trouble was packaging it as a separate track with its own membership in the same announcement that told veterans they couldn't bring their characters.

And I'd rather live in a world where a studio says "we missed the mark" on day 12 than one where it defends a bad plan until day 120. That's the optimistic read, and I think it's the correct one.

The reflective part is what's left over. Cancelling Reignited fixed the mistake. It didn't fix the reason Reignited existed. A new player in 2026 still faces 25 years of content, and Jagex's remaining answer is the Adventure Guide, the first Remastered Journey update and a free trial. Whether that's enough, I honestly can't tell from here, and I'd be guessing if I pretended otherwise.

Here are my grades. They're opinion, so argue with them:

B-
The ideaA fresh start is a real answer to a real problem, and Jagex had tried a temporary version before.
D
The revealNo account conversion, a second membership and no trading with veterans, all in one announcement with a launch date attached.
A
The listeningOfficial responses on Oct. 6 and Oct. 9 before the final call on Oct. 15.
A
The speed of the reversalTwelve days, with a plain apology and no spin.
INC.
Fixing the new-player problemThe Dec. 2 tools exist on paper. I can't grade a result that hasn't happened.

If you're curious about RuneScape and you qualify for the free window, it looks like the lowest-risk way I've seen to kick the tires, since Jagex's terms describe it as free access. Read those terms first, because the exact timings are still marked to be confirmed.

07The Rapid Round

Is the Dec. 2 RuneScape update still happening?

Yes. Jagex says it will release the Adventure Guide, the first Remastered Journey update and other improvements that day.

Is there still a RuneScape free trial in December 2026?

Yes. Jagex describes a 10-day free access period to members worlds and content, Dec. 2 to Dec. 12, with exact timings to be confirmed.

Who qualifies for the RuneScape free trial?

New characters, and any character that on Dec. 2 hasn't been in membership since June 2, according to Jagex's wording.

Does the free trial work on Old School RuneScape?

No. The terms say it does not apply to Old School RuneScape.

What is the RuneScape Adventure Guide?

According to the RuneScape Wiki, it's an optional guidance system for players at all stages of progression, arriving Dec. 2.

What was the Evolution of Combat update?

A combat overhaul that arrived in November 2012. GamesRadar says many players quit over it, and Old School RuneScape grew out of the version that existed before it.

Did Jagex say Reignited is coming back?

Jagex's post says it is not moving forward with Reignited. I didn't find any plan to revive it in the sources I read.

What is RuneScape 4?

A fourth RuneScape game announced at the same RuneFest. GamesRadar's coverage quotes Jagex saying it is not a replacement for any of its games.

Where I land

The facts are simple enough. Jagex revealed a controversial plan, listened for twelve days, and cancelled it. What's still on the calendar is a Dec. 2 update, a free window for new and returning characters, and a roadmap Jagex says is intact.

What I keep thinking about is how rare that sequence is. A studio heard its players, changed course fast and said so out loud. The new-player problem is still there, and Jagex still has to solve it. But I'd rather watch a company work on a hard problem after admitting a mistake than one that never admits anything at all.
