Nintendo just gave a game about tiny plant creatures its own holiday, and I think that’s quietly wonderful. On Sunday, Nov. 1, Nintendo declared the date Pikmin Day, aired a short dedicated Direct and, in a move I respect, said right on the Direct’s page that there would be no new game announcements. What we got instead was dates, a price for the upgrade and a free demo.

So what does that mean if you own Pikmin 4 on the original Switch, or you’ve been eyeing it for a Switch 2? This is a decision guide with a point of view: what the $9.99 upgrade really buys, what the full edition costs, what nobody has confirmed, and a four-question path I built so you can get to an answer in about a minute. One honest note first. I haven’t played the Switch 2 Edition or the demo, and the full game isn’t out, so there are no reviews yet. Anything about how it plays is a guess. Everything about dates, prices and features comes from Nintendo or from outlets that read its announcements.

My verdict. If you already own Pikmin 4 and have a Switch 2, $9.99 is an easy yes on paper. If you’ve never played it, take the free demo on Nov. 2 before you spend $69.99 on anything. And if timed scoring stages make your shoulders tense, remember the upgrade is also just a sharper-looking version of the same adventure.

Four dates and one tiny holiday

Why Nov. 1? According to Nintendo Life’s recap, Shigeru Miyamoto explained that three Pikmin standing in a row look like the number one, which turns 11/1 into Pikmin Day. Outlets also report Nintendo plans to repeat it every year. Here are the four dates worth putting on a calendar.

Nov1Sun

Pikmin Day

Nintendo airs a short Direct with no new game announcements, streams a Nintendo Treehouse Plays session of the Switch 2 Edition at 9 a.m. PT (noon ET) and releases the first episode of the animated shorts Hello! Pikmin, “#01 Frog.”

Nov2Mon

The free demo

The opening area, Sunspeckled Terrace, plus two Dandori Academy stages. Save data carries over to the full game.

Nov12Thu

Launch day

Pikmin 4 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy and the $9.99 upgrade pack both release on Nintendo Switch 2.

Winter2026Bloom

Secret Caves in Pikmin Bloom

Nintendo says the mobile game gets Secret Caves this winter. Outlets report that special cave maps can be earned by completing Dandori Academy exams in the Switch 2 Edition.

The original Pikmin 4 came out on Switch on July 21, 2023, according to Wikipedia, and Nintendo first revealed the Switch 2 Edition in its September Direct. I covered that Direct in my Nintendo Direct breakdown.

What the $9.99 actually buys

Nintendo describes the Switch 2 Edition as the Switch game plus the upgrade pack, so the story and the world are the same. The pack adds four things.

New mode

Dandori Academy

A series of Dandori exam stages where you test how quickly you can collect treasure within a stage and earn in-game medals. Nintendo says 72 stages will be released over time, at varying difficulty. Insider Gaming calls it a timed exam mode.

New control

Voice commands for Oatchi

Oatchi, the space dog, now listens through the Switch 2’s built-in microphone. Recaps of the Direct list commands such as “Rush” and “Go to work.”

New way to share

Dandori Battles with GameShare

Play Dandori Battles on one system, or invite a friend through GameShare, locally or online via GameChat, even if they don’t own the game. Nintendo lists 1–2 players on a single system, and 2 players locally or online.

Better picture

Sharper visuals

Nintendo promises improved high-resolution visuals in both TV and handheld mode. Its New Zealand eShop page goes further and cites enhanced resolutions up to 4K in TV mode. I haven’t seen frame-rate or resolution tests.

One practical number: Nintendo’s store page estimates the file size at 12.8 GB on Switch 2, compared with 11.3 GB for the Switch version. GameShare has fine print too: the Switch 2 must start the session, online sharing needs GameChat plus a Nintendo Switch Online membership and a Nintendo Account, and a shared game stops being playable when the session ends.

The money, sorted by what you own

Four situations cover almost everyone. The first two prices come from Nintendo. The third comes from retailers, and that distinction matters.

Want to try it firstFreeDemo, Nov. 2

Opening area plus two Dandori Academy stages. Your save carries over if you buy the full game.

Own Pikmin 4 on the original Switch$9.99Upgrade pack

Listed on Nintendo’s own Direct page. Nintendo’s fine print says the full Pikmin 4 game is required and sold separately. For details on how it treats physical versus digital copies, Nintendo points to its upgrade-pack support page, which I haven’t opened.

New to Pikmin 4, physical copy$69.99Retailer listings

GameStop and Walmart both list $69.99. The Nintendo page I read does not show a price for the full edition, so this is a retailer number, not a Nintendo announcement.

New to Pikmin 4, digital copyNot shown

Nintendo’s store page lists a digital edition, but I couldn’t find a price on it.

My own math, nothing more: $9.99 is about 14% of $69.99, roughly one-seventh. If all 72 Dandori Academy stages arrive, the pack works out to about 14 cents a stage. Since Nintendo says the stages are released over time, that per-stage figure is a ceiling on value, not a day-one reality.

My four-question upgrade path

I built this because “is it worth it?” depends almost entirely on what’s already in your library. Start at question one and follow the arrows.

  1. Do you own Pikmin 4 on the original Switch?

    YesGo to question 2.

    NoSkip to question 4.

  2. Do you have a Switch 2 and still want to play, or replay, Pikmin 4?

    YesGo to question 3.

NoKeep what you have. Nintendo’s page says you can keep playing the Switch version, so nothing forces the upgrade.

  3. Does any of this sound fun: timed treasure exams, shouting orders at Oatchi, sharing Dandori Battles with a friend who doesn’t own the game, or just a sharper picture?

Yes to anyBuy the $9.99 pack. That’s my easy yes.

NoneSkip it without guilt. It’s a $9.99 bundle of extras, and not wanting extras is a perfectly good answer.

  4. Never played it? Download the free demo on Nov. 2.

Play Sunspeckled Terrace and the two Dandori Academy stages. If you’re hooked, your save carries over to the full Switch 2 Edition, which retailers list at $69.99 for the physical copy.

If it doesn’t click, you’ve spent nothing but a little storage space and an evening.

What nobody has confirmed yet

A good guide marks its own blank spots. These are the five questions I couldn’t answer from anything I read.

How will the 72 stages roll out?

Nintendo says they’ll be released over time. I found no schedule, so I can’t tell you how many are there on day one.

What does the full digital edition cost in the U.S.?

The Nintendo page I read didn’t display it, and GameNewsPlus says the same. The $69.99 figure is for the physical edition at retailers.

How does it actually run?

No resolution or frame-rate tests exist yet, because the full game isn’t out. “Up to 4K in TV mode” comes from Nintendo’s New Zealand eShop listing.

Does the upgrade pack treat physical and digital copies the same way?

Nintendo’s product page sends readers to a support page for details. I didn’t find the answer in the coverage I read.

Do voice commands hold up in a noisy living room?

I haven’t tried them, and no reviewer has either. A microphone competing with a TV and a household is a different test from a Treehouse demo.

Never played Pikmin 4? The quick version

Nintendo’s own description is hard to improve on: Pikmin are small, plant-like creatures you grow, pluck, guide and send into battle against creatures many times their size. They come in types with different talents, and Nintendo’s page names fire-resistant Red Pikmin, Ice Pikmin that can freeze bodies of water and Glow Pikmin that light the way at night. Oatchi is your dependable canine partner, and “dandori” is a Japanese word for efficient planning, which is really the whole game: send the right helpers to the right job in the right order.

That’s also why the cover photo is an ant carrying a leaf. Hauling things home to base is what Pikmin spend most of their time doing, and the ant does it with a lot less fanfare. For parents: Nintendo’s page lists the content descriptors Comic Mischief and Fantasy Violence, and the ESRB site has the full rating.

My take: yes on paper, with one asterisk

I keep coming back to how little Nintendo promised. A company that says up front that no new game is coming has already lowered the temperature, and what’s left is dates, a demo and a price. In a month when so much of the gaming conversation is bracing for Grand Theft Auto VI on Nov. 19, a holiday built around small plant creatures feels like a deliberate change of pace. I mean that as a compliment.

The $9.99 is the part I like most. It’s about one-seventh of the $69.99 retailers list for the full edition, and for that you get a new mode, a way to share Dandori Battles with a friend who doesn’t own the game, voice commands and a sharper picture. Other Switch 2 upgrades have gone different ways. Minecraft’s, for example, is free for digital Switch owners until Jan. 31, which I wrote about in my Minecraft upgrade guide. Ten dollars feels like a sensible middle for a first-party game with new content. I think it’s priced to be forgiven rather than debated.

My asterisk is the 72 stages. Nintendo says they’ll be released over time, and I couldn’t find a schedule. Paying today for something that arrives in pieces isn’t a sin at this price, but it’s the one part of the deal that asks you to take Nintendo’s word. If the cadence is generous, the math I did above looks better with every batch. If it’s thin, the pack leans harder on voice commands, GameShare and visuals. I can’t tell which yet, so I’m saying yes on paper, not yes forever.

I have to admit the voice commands won me over on charm alone. Nintendo’s own page jokes that you shouldn’t be shy about telling Oatchi how good he is, and I love that a company with this much hardware to sell put a dog at the center of a feature. Whether the microphone picks you up over a TV, a toddler or a dishwasher is another question, and I haven’t tested it.

Dandori Academy is the piece I’m most curious about and slightly wary of. Pikmin has always been a game about planning, and a timed treasure rush with medals is that idea at its most distilled. I think it could be a great doorway for people who love to optimize. My worry, and it’s a purely personal one, is that a gentle, wandering game gets a scoring mood laid over it. The saving grace is that it’s a mode, not the main course.

What would change my view? Reviews that report performance problems, an upgrade pack that behaves differently from what Nintendo’s support page says, or a stage schedule that turns out thin. Until those facts exist, the sensible move is the one Nintendo is handing everyone for free: play the demo on Nov. 2 and let your own save decide.

HOW WE REPORTED THIS

Independently reported and written for this story from Nintendo’s own pages and published coverage of the Pikmin Day Direct. I haven’t played the Switch 2 Edition or its demo, and the full game isn’t out, so there are no reviews to cite. The Nintendo page I read did not show a price for the full edition, so the $69.99 figure comes from retailer listings. The “up to 4K” detail comes from Nintendo’s New Zealand eShop page, and the voice-command examples come from outlet recaps of the Direct. I did not open Nintendo’s upgrade-pack support page. Prices are in U.S. dollars. The per-stage math, the four-question path and the verdict are my own judgments, not data. See our full editorial methodology for how we report and correct stories.
