Here is the strangest thing about Paper Tiger: the same movie, from the same festival, in the same week, got a standing ovation that reports put at ten minutes, a C- and a 2-out-of-5 review. When critics disagree that loudly about a James Gray movie, I stop asking “is it good?” and start asking “which kind of viewer is it for?”

That’s what this piece is. I haven’t seen the film, so I won’t pretend to review it. What I did was read the critics who have, put their verdicts in a jury box, and figure out where they agree, where they fight and what that means for your Friday night. Then I’ll give you my own pre-release call, labeled as exactly that.

The Key Points

  • Paper Tiger opens in limited release Friday, Nov. 13 and expands nationwide Friday, Nov. 20, per TheWrap. Neon is releasing it.
  • It is rated R for language and some violence and runs 1 hour 55 minutes, per Rotten Tomatoes.
  • Adam Driver, Miles Teller and Scarlett Johansson star as the Pearl family. It is Driver and Johansson’s first film together since Marriage Story.
  • Rotten Tomatoes showed 86% from 81 reviews on Nov. 2, with no audience score yet.
  • In the seven reviews I read, four were warm, one was in between and two were negative. Nearly everyone who mentioned Driver liked him, and every critic who singled out Johansson’s storyline had a problem with it.

Notice what’s missing: no big studio, no franchise, no effects budget. Fifteen million dollars is small for a film with this cast. That means the movie lives or dies on its performances and its mood, not on spectacle.

Exhibit B · The story

What is Paper Tiger about, with no spoilers?

Neon’s official synopsis is short: two brothers chase the American Dream in late-1980s New York and get pulled into a scheme that turns out to be too good to be true. The Russian mob starts terrorizing them and their family, and the brothers’ bond starts to fracture.

The reviews I read fill in the shape of it. Irwin is a mild-mannered engineer getting his oldest son ready for college. His flashier older brother Gary, a former cop, brings him a business deal: consult on a property by a polluted canal for new Russian occupants who need to meet environmental rules. As Sight and Sound’s review puts it, the Italian mobsters have moved out of the neighborhood and the Russians have moved in. The deal sours, and the family pays for it.

Is Paper Tiger a true story?

Not in the way a true-crime movie is. Nothing in Neon’s synopsis says it’s based on real events. What Gray has said, according to Wikipedia’s summary of his comments, is that it’s a personal film “about my family,” told partly from his parents’ point of view. I’d call it a family memory dressed as a crime thriller, which, if you know his work, is the most Gray thing imaginable.

Exhibit C · The critics

The jury box: seven critics, three verdicts

I picked seven reviews and first reactions that I could read or confirm through coverage, and sorted them by their overall verdict, not by how much I agree. I’m paraphrasing, and every quote is short.

ForStephanie Zacharek, Time

Called it “an old school thriller in the best way” and “quietly operatic in its intensity,” per a roundup of first reactions.

ForDavid Ehrlich, IndieWire

Praised it as “both sweepingly mythic and hauntingly personal all at once,” per the same roundup.

ForSteve Pond, TheWrap

Called it “a taut exercise in suspense” and wrote, “Rarely do you find a thriller with this much heart.”

ForHannah Strong, Little White Lies

Positive and quiet about it. She praised Driver and Teller, called the stillness “deeply rewarding” and said the film is less overwhelming than Armageddon Time and The Immigrant, but better for being quieter. She found Johansson’s performance fussy, with a distracting wig.

HungJohn Bleasdale, Sight and Sound

A “handsome, serious film” and a tense thriller, but not better than Gray’s best, which he considers We Own the Night. Johansson’s thread, in his view, is underdeveloped and weighed down by melodrama.

AgainstAwardsWatch

Gave it a C-. The review calls the ending overly sentimental, says Teller’s character fades as the script forgets him and says Johansson’s health storyline feels out of place.

AgainstBen Rolph, DiscussingFilm

Gave it 2 out of 5 and called it a clichéd narrative with hollow characters. He did single out Driver’s performance, a tense cornfield scene and a home-invasion sequence as highlights.

4 for1 hung2 against

Two honest caveats. Seven is a small jury, and I chose these seven, so don’t treat my tally as a poll. The real aggregate is Rotten Tomatoes: 86% from 81 reviews on Nov. 2. Wikipedia’s summary, which may be older, lists 79 on Metacritic from 24 critics. Those numbers will move.

Deliberations

Where the jury agrees, and where it fights

The most useful thing about a split verdict is that the splits are specific. These aren’t seven random opinions. They’re the same four arguments, repeated.

Adam Driver as GaryAgreement

Everyone who rated his work liked it. DiscussingFilm called it the film’s strongest performance, Sight and Sound pointed to his “snap and flair,” and Little White Lies described a charming, polished older brother. Even the C- review praised him.

Scarlett Johansson as HesterWeak spot

All four reviews that discussed her role had a problem with it, whether that was melodrama, an underwritten part, a distracting wig or a health storyline that felt tacked on. If you’re buying a ticket mostly for her, that’s worth knowing.

Miles Teller as IrwinFight

The same performance got four different readings. DiscussingFilm called him miscast, Sight and Sound called his the most anguished turn, Little White Lies called it transformative and AwardsWatch said the script forgets him.

The sentimentFight

This is the whole argument. TheWrap’s Pond sees a thriller with unusual heart. AwardsWatch sees a finale that’s “schmaltzy” and unintentionally funny. Same ingredient, opposite reactions.

That last one matters most. When critics trade the same quality as a virtue and a flaw, it usually means the movie is making a bet. Paper Tiger bets that you’ll accept earnest feeling inside a crime story. If that sounds like your kind of movie, the jury’s mixed verdict is less scary than it looks.

Context

Why this movie carries more weight than its $15 million

A few details make this release bigger than a modest crime drama. It’s the first time Driver and Johansson have shared a movie since Marriage Story, which TheWrap noted when Neon set the date. Wikipedia’s account of the casting says the project was first announced in 2024 with Anne Hathaway and Jeremy Strong alongside Driver, and that Johansson and Teller replaced them by May 2025. And it’s Gray’s first feature since Armageddon Time in 2022, another memory piece set in the New York he grew up in.

It also arrives through the front door of the festival circuit. It premiered in competition at Cannes and opened the New York Film Festival, which means critics and festival crowds have already weighed in. Whether any of that turns into trophies is a question for later, and I won’t pretend to know.

Verdict

My verdict on the hung jury

7 / 10 My excitement level before seeing it. This is not a review score

I’m going in with real curiosity, not blind faith. The praise is specific, from critics who care about craft, and the criticism is also specific, which makes it easier to trust. Nobody is saying the film is a mess. They’re saying the heart is either its best feature or its biggest risk.

That’s a bet I’m happy to see someone make in a $15 million movie shot on film. I’d rather watch a director swing at feeling and miss a little than watch another gray, safe thriller that never risks being laughed at.

Buy the ticket if…
  • You like patient family dramas where the crime is the pressure, not the point.
  • You’re willing to forgive some melodrama for a big emotional swing.
  • You trust Adam Driver to carry a scene, because every critic who rated him did.
Wait for home if…
  • You want twists and a tight crime plot above everything.
  • Sentiment in a crime story makes you roll your eyes.
  • You’re coming mostly for Johansson. That’s the thread critics doubted most.

One warning on reading the reviews: the two harshest write-ups complain that it feels familiar, while the warm ones say that familiarity is the point. If you’ve never seen a Gray movie, “familiar” isn’t a problem you can have yet.

Homework

Two James Gray movies to watch first, in my order

You don’t need homework to see Paper Tiger. But if you have two evenings before Nov. 13, this is the order I’d pick, and it’s my opinion, not a ranking of quality.

  1. We Own the Night (2007)Sight and Sound’s reviewer calls it Gray’s finest, and Little White Lies places Paper Tiger in the same line of brother stories. It’s the closest thing to the crime half of this movie.
  2. Armageddon Time (2022)The most personal side of Gray, set in the New York of his childhood. Wikipedia says he first described Paper Tiger as a follow-up to it, so this is the family half.

If you’ve seen neither and only have time for one, pick based on what you want from the new movie. Crime first, We Own the Night. Feeling first, Armageddon Time.

Logistics

When should you buy the ticket for Paper Tiger?

The release is staggered, so your date depends on where you live. Nov. 13 is a limited release, which usually means big cities first, and the nationwide expansion follows Nov. 20. I haven’t seen a theater count, so I won’t guess how wide “nationwide” is.

The calendar around it is crowded. Madden opens in select theaters Nov. 11, and The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping opens Nov. 20, the same day as Paper Tiger’s expansion. If screens are tight, a smaller drama can lose showtimes quickly, so opening weekend matters more than usual for a movie like this.

HOW WE REPORTED THIS

Independently reported and written for this story from published coverage on Nov. 2, 2026. I did not see the film. The release dates come from TheWrap and Rotten Tomatoes, the rating, runtime and Tomatometer from Rotten Tomatoes’ page, and the cast, budget and production history from Wikipedia. The critic summaries come from the reviews linked below, and the Time and IndieWire quotes come from a Sunday Guardian roundup of first reactions, not from the original reviews. The tally of seven reviews is my own selection, not a poll. The 7-out-of-10 excitement score, the buy-or-wait picks and the James Gray watch order are my own opinion, not data. Dates, scores and ratings can change. See our full editorial methodology for how we verify claims and separate fact from analysis.
