Neve Campbell has been playing Sidney Prescott since 1996, and on Monday she told the Associated Press she’s going to do it again. Asked what she has coming up, she listed a couple of TV projects, then Scream 8. When the reporter pressed her for details, she laughed and said she couldn’t tell anyone anything. Then came the only line that really matters: “I’ll be in it.”
That’s a real piece of news, and a small one at the same time. It tells us Sidney is in the next movie. It doesn’t tell us who’s directing, who else is coming back, what the story is or when it opens. iHorror reports that Paramount hasn’t dated the film and that the director’s chair is still empty.
So I want to do two things here. First, sort what’s actually confirmed from what’s just floating around. Second, use the box office numbers to answer a question I keep wondering about: how much did Sidney’s return add to Scream 7? I’ll keep the reporting and my opinions clearly separate as we go.
The Key Points
- Neve Campbell told the AP on Monday, Nov. 2, that she’ll be in Scream 8, per Variety, Dark Horizons and iHorror. It would be her seventh turn as Sidney.
- The film is in development at Paramount and Spyglass Media. No director, cast list, plot or release date has been announced.
- Dark Horizons says Spyglass hired Poker Face showrunners Lilla and Nora Zuckerman to write it, as reported in March. iHorror, citing The Hollywood Reporter, says Kevin Williamson is moving to a producer role.
- Scream 7 opened to $64.1 million domestically and $97.2 million worldwide, and finished at roughly $214 million worldwide on a $45 million budget, the best totals in the series.
- The only Scream movie without Sidney is Scream VI (2023), which still made about $169 million worldwide.
Neve Campbell’s Scream 8 confirmation: what she actually said, and where she said it
She also called Scream 8 “in the pipeline” and joked she can never tell anyone anything about it.
Notice what this is and what it isn’t. It’s an actress answering “what’s next?” at a premiere, not a studio press release. Variety, Dark Horizons, iHorror and others all ran with it, and I think they were right to, because Campbell is the face of this series. But I didn’t find a statement from Paramount or Spyglass in the coverage I read, and that fits with a film that has no date or director yet.
Why does her yes matter so much? Because there was a stretch where it wasn’t a given. She sat out Scream VI over a pay dispute, and she has been open about why. In 2022 she told Variety the offer on the table didn’t reflect what she’d brought to the franchise. She came back for Scream 7 once Kevin Williamson, who wrote the original Scream, signed on to direct and built the story around Sidney, per iHorror. Hearing her say “I’ll be in it” about the next one tells me, and this is my read, that whatever deal got her back for Scream 7 worked well enough for everyone to do it again.
Ring 02 · What’s confirmedIs Scream 8 happening? What’s answered, what’s ringing out, and my guess
Green means it’s in the reporting. Red means nobody has said it. Purple is only me.
She told the AP “I’ll be in it.” Dark Horizons, iHorror and Variety all report it as her confirmation. Sidney Prescott has been in six of the seven Scream films so far, and this would be her seventh.
iHorror describes Scream 8 as in development at Paramount and Spyglass Media Group, and Dark Horizons places it at Paramount too. Nobody has set a date.
Dark Horizons says that, at last report in March, Spyglass hired the Poker Face showrunners to write the script. iHorror says “reportedly.” I haven’t seen a formal announcement.
iHorror, citing The Hollywood Reporter, says Williamson, who directed Scream 7, is moving to a producer role. Courteney Cox said at the Toronto film festival in September that she thinks she should direct, per iHorror. Nothing is official.
Campbell didn’t name any castmates. Whether Gale, Sidney’s husband Mark or her daughter Tatum come back is open. The story and the release date haven’t been announced either.
With no director and a script that’s still early, a 2027 release would surprise me. The last two gaps between movies were about 14 months (2022 to 2023) and just under three years (2023 to 2026). That’s a hunch from the calendar and nothing more.
Sidney Prescott’s Scream movies, ranked by box office: every film, whether she’s in it, and what it made
Here’s the whole franchise on one page. The bars show worldwide gross compared with Scream 7, and none of the money is adjusted for inflation. Figures come from The Numbers, except Scream 7’s total, which comes from Wikipedia.
Scream VI’s budget is listed as $33 million or $35 million depending on the page of The Numbers you check, so I show the range. Release dates: Dec. 20, 1996, Dec. 12, 1997, Feb. 4, 2000, Apr. 15, 2011, Jan. 14, 2022, Mar. 10, 2023 and Feb. 27, 2026.
Two things jump out at me. The first is that the franchise clearly doesn’t need Sidney to work. Scream VI did about $169 million without her, more than three of the six films she is in. The second is that her biggest hit by far is the one she came back to after missing a movie. That’s either a coincidence or a very good argument for being missed.
Ring 04 · The mathDid Neve Campbell’s return help Scream 7 at the box office? Scream VI vs. Scream 7, head to head
This is the part I wanted to see, so I did the math myself. Take the last movie without Sidney and the first movie with her back, and compare them.
Scream VI
Mar. 10, 2023 · no SidneyScream 7
Feb. 27, 2026 · Sidney backOn the surface, that’s a big win for Sidney. The opening jumped by almost half and the worldwide total grew by about a quarter. The extra worldwide gross is roughly $45 million. For context, Variety’s reporting put Campbell’s Scream 7 pay at about $7 million, but a gross isn’t profit, since theaters keep a share and these budgets leave out marketing, so I wouldn’t treat that comparison as proof of anything. It’s a sanity check, nothing more.
Now the caveats, because this is exactly where people oversell the story:
Scream 7 cost $45 million, the most expensive in the franchise, per SlashFilm. Divide each worldwide total by its budget and you get about 4.8x for both films. If you use the lower $33 million budget for VI, that film looks a little better, at about 5.1x.
AceShowbiz reported Scream 7 was the first in the series released in Imax, and that premium screens accounted for about 40% of the revenue in that debut. The writer of the original film was also back as writer and director, per Newsweek.
The domestic total was about $122 million per Box Office Watch, which is 1.9 times the opening. Scream VI finished at 2.4 times its opening. Big first weekend, less staying power.
So here’s my read, and it’s an opinion. Sidney is a fantastic opener but not a magic multiplier. Her return did a lot for the first weekend and less for the long run, and per dollar of budget the two movies were basically tied. That’s a good thing to keep in mind when someone says Scream 8 is a sure bet because she’s in it. It’s a good bet. It isn’t a guarantee.

What I want from Scream 8: three wishes for Sidney’s seventh movie
None of this is reporting. It’s what I’d ask for if somebody at Paramount picked up the phone.
Over six movies, Sidney has mostly been the person Ghostface is calling. After all this time, I’d love to see her be the one who decides what happens next. Not a big speech, a decision. That’s the difference between a legacy sequel and a legacy cameo.
Scream VI showed the series can make $169 million without her, and Scream 7 showed her return can lift an opening by 44%. The smart version of the next film uses both facts: a story that’s better with Sidney in it, and strong enough to carry on if she’s off-screen for a while.
Dread Central’s reviewer found Scream 7 safe and predictable, even while praising Campbell’s grounded work. That’s one critic, but it sounds like a lot of legacy sequels to me. After a $214 million hit, Paramount has room to let the next one be scarier and stranger.
Good news, thin on detail. Campbell’s yes is the best first call Scream 8 could have gotten, and the second one, who’s directing it, is the one that will tell us what kind of movie this is.
How to catch up on Scream before Scream 8 without losing a month
This is my own take on where to start, based on which films Sidney is in.
- If you have one evening
- Watch Wes Craven’s Scream (1996) to see where Sidney starts, then think about Scream 7 (2026, 114 minutes) for where she is now.
- If you have a weekend
- Add Scream 2 and the 2022 Scream. Sidney is in both, and the 2022 film is the bridge to the newer cast.
- If you’re a completionist
- Watch all seven in release order. Scream VI is the one entry without Sidney, so her story doesn’t depend on it. Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding, who are in Scream 7, are the reason I wouldn’t skip it.
Still unknown
None of the coverage I read answers these yet:
- Director
- Who is behind the camera, and whether Cox’s TIFF comments turn into anything
- Cast beyond Campbell
- Whether Courteney Cox, Joel McHale, Isabel May, Jasmin Savoy Brown or Mason Gooding return. Campbell didn’t name anyone
- Story
- What the plot is and how much of it belongs to Sidney
- Release date
- Paramount hasn’t dated the film

Independently reported and written for this story from published coverage on Nov. 3, 2026. Campbell’s confirmation comes from her Associated Press interview as reported by Variety, Dark Horizons, iHorror, Dread Central and SciFiNow; we did not hear the interview ourselves. The writers, director situation and Courteney Cox’s TIFF remarks are reported by Dark Horizons and iHorror, which cites The Hollywood Reporter, and we haven’t seen a studio announcement of any of them. Box office figures come from The Numbers, Wikipedia, Newsweek, Box Office Watch and AceShowbiz, and the sources round a little differently, so we say “roughly $214 million” for Scream 7’s worldwide total. The percentage changes, the per-dollar multiples, the domestic-total-to-opening ratios and the $45 million difference between the two movies’ worldwide grosses are our own arithmetic from those sources. The three wishes, the verdict and the catch-up guide are our opinion, and the 2028 timing is a guess, not reporting.
