When I saw the rumor that the first Man of Tomorrow teaser would play in front of Dune: Part Three in December, my first reaction was a little jolt of excitement. That’s just how it goes with a Superman trailer rumor. Then, on Friday, James Gunn shut the idea down in a handful of short Threads replies. My second reaction surprised me: relief.
That gap between what I wanted and what I ended up feeling is the reason for this story. Plenty of outlets will tell you “no trailer this year.” I wanted to show you exactly what Gunn said, check whether the rumor was even a reasonable guess, lay out everything that’s actually confirmed about the movie, and tell you why I think the wait is the right call.
My verdict in one breath. No teaser in 2026 is good news, not bad news. The rumor was reasonable, because the calendar lined up almost perfectly, but a director who says “no” this plainly is a director who isn’t going to rush the first look. I’d rather get a trailer that’s ready than one that’s early.
What Gunn actually said, reply by reply
Gunn answered the trailer question twice in two weeks, and the second answer is the one that matters. Here it is laid out like the thread it came from. The quotes are as reported by ComicBookMovie and Dark Horizons.
Is a Man of Tomorrow sneak peek coming soon?
“No.”
Then he walked away laughing, per ComicBookMovie. The first trailer will be attached to Dune: Part Three in cinemas in December. A post repeating this cited BeyondReporter as the source.
“Expected by whom???”
“More like James not wanting people to be disappointed when there’s no trailer in December.”
Dark Horizons reports that Gunn confirmed no teaser before the end of 2026.Put the replies side by side and the message is consistent: don’t wait for December. The first “No” was easy to read as a joke, and ComicBookMovie noted at the time that it didn’t completely rule out a trailer this year. The Threads reply did. That’s why I treat Oct. 30 as the real answer.
One thing I want to be careful about: Gunn didn’t say when the trailer is coming, only when it isn’t. “Nothing in 2026” is a confirmed fact. Anything about early 2027 is a guess, mine included.
The 204-day math: why the December rumor made sense
Here’s the part I think most coverage skipped. The rumor wasn’t random. I checked it against the last time Gunn launched a Superman movie.
- Superman (2025): the first teaser came out on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2024, and the film opened on July 11, 2025, according to ABC News.
- The gap: that is 204 days from first teaser to opening day.
- Man of Tomorrow: opens July 9, 2027. Count back the same 204 days and you land on Dec. 17, 2026, one day before Dune: Part Three opens.
That last line is the whole rumor in one sentence. A trailer riding along with Dune: Part Three would have matched the Superman playbook almost to the day. This is my arithmetic, not a studio plan, but it shows why the story spread so fast.
The striped part is the 47 days between today and Dec. 17, the date a Superman-sized lead would have required. No teaser is coming in that stretch.
So today we’re 251 days from release with no trailer, compared to the 204 days that separated the first Superman teaser from its opening. A shorter runway is entirely possible now. Whether that matters is a different question, and I get to it below.
For context on how big that first teaser was: Gunn said it was the most-viewed trailer in the history of DC and Warner Bros., according to WION. That’s his claim, and WION’s own article didn’t give a separate 24-hour count, so I’m treating it as a bar he set for himself rather than a verified record. It does help explain the pressure on whatever comes next.
Everything confirmed about Man of Tomorrow
If you landed here just wanting the facts, this is the cheat sheet. The details come from Dark Horizons and Wikipedia’s film page, which I’ve noted where it matters.
- Release date
- July 9, 2027 (a Friday), in U.S. theaters from Warner Bros. Pictures. Expected in IMAX, per Wikipedia.
- Written and directed by
- James Gunn, who also produces with Peter Safran.
- The story, so far
- Superman reluctantly teams up with Lex Luthor against Brainiac, a threat to Metropolis and the world.
- Where it sits
- A direct follow-up to Superman (2025), set in “real time” afterward, roughly mid-2027, per Wikipedia.
- Filming
- April 20 to August 26, 2026, about 93 days, with Trilith Studios in Georgia as the main base. Cincinnati and the U.K. are also listed, per Wikipedia.
- Already shown
- Nicholas Hoult’s Warsuit first look (June 2026) and the return of Blue Beetle (July 2026), per Wikipedia.
- Not announced
- A trailer date, a plot beyond the premise above, and Adria Arjona’s role. Wikipedia notes she’s reportedly Maxima, which isn’t confirmed.
And the cast, as listed on Wikipedia’s film page:
- David Corenswet Superman
- Nicholas Hoult Lex Luthor
- Lars Eidinger Brainiac
- Rachel Brosnahan Lois Lane
- Milly Alcock Supergirl
- Edi Gathegi Mister Terrific
- Nathan Fillion Guy Gardner
- Aaron Pierre John Stewart
- Isabela Merced Hawkgirl
- Xolo Maridueña Blue Beetle
- Skyler Gisondo Jimmy Olsen
- Frank Grillo Rick Flag Sr.
- Sara Sampaio Eve Teschmacher
- María Gabriela de Faría The Engineer
Andre Royo, Matthew Lillard and Sinqua Walls are also in the film in undisclosed roles, per the same page.
The line I keep returning to is Gunn’s own description: “as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie,” as Wikipedia quotes him. That tells me the trailer, whenever it arrives, probably has to sell a partnership between two men who don’t trust each other, not just a hero in a cape.
Why I think waiting is the right call
This is the section where I stop reporting and start arguing. Three reasons, in the order I’d rank them.
- A first look should be a first impression, not a placeholder.A teaser that exists only because a rival film is opening that weekend feels like a calendar obligation. The first Superman teaser worked, in my opinion, because it felt like an announcement. I’d rather this one be treated the same way.
- Gunn is managing expectations, and he’s doing it out loud. His reply about not wanting people “to be disappointed when there’s no trailer in December” is a director lowering the temperature on purpose. After a first film with a trailer record he himself pointed to, that’s a smart instinct. I’ll take honesty over a rumor mill any day.
- December is loud.Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three both open Dec. 18, a clash I broke down in my Dunesday story. A teaser released into that week would share the spotlight with two giant releases. Silence until the noise dies down looks like good timing to me, though that’s my read, not something Gunn or Warner Bros. has said.
Now the other side, because it’s fair. A long quiet leaves room for rumors, and December’s story is proof of that. No trailer also means no early read on how Corenswet and Hoult play off each other, which is the hook of the whole movie. If you’re a fan who wanted something to hold onto this holiday season, I get the disappointment. I felt a version of it too.
My honest guess, and it’s only a guess, is that the first look arrives in the early months of 2027. I have no reporting behind that. It’s instinct built on the 204-day gap and the fact that Gunn only closed the door on 2026.
My first-teaser wishlist
Since there’s time to daydream, here’s what I’d love the first Man of Tomorrow teaser to do. None of this is confirmed or reported. It’s a fan’s checklist with a critic’s eye.
- Hoult in the Warsuit, in motion. We’ve had the first look. I want to see how it moves next to Corenswet.
- Two men in one frame. The pairing is the story. A teaser that opens on Superman and Luthor facing each other would tell me everything about the tone.
- Brainiac glimpsed, not explained.Gunn described him as what happens “when intelligence loses all connection to humanity,” per Wikipedia. A teaser that keeps him partly hidden would honor that.
- One quiet human moment. The best superhero trailers, to me, are the ones that slow down for a second. I’d trade one more explosion for a Clark and Lois beat.
Two other things Gunn said in the same thread
The Threads conversation covered more than the trailer, according to Dark Horizons. Two replies stood out.
- On the next Batman: “No one is in the running. We haven’t started casting yet.” Gunn used it to dismiss current reports. If you’re following that story, my piece on The Batman Part II covers the other Batman.
- On The Suicide Squad: with that film now considered canon, he said the line about Bloodsport shooting Superman with a kryptonite bullet “will be answered.” No details were given.
Neither one has a date or a plan attached, so I’m not reading more into them than Gunn did.
What stays with me is how little this announcement actually changes. Man of Tomorrow is the same movie on the same date it was yesterday. The only thing that moved is my expectation of when I’ll first see it. Honestly, there’s something kind of nice about that: a big studio movie where the director says “not yet” out loud instead of feeding the rumor machine. I’d rather arrive in July 2027 curious than burned out from watching the same teaser forty times.
