Here's a sentence I didn't expect to write about a video game: the thing I'm most curious about in GTA 6 right now is the weather.
Not the story, not the guns, not the skyline. The weather. On September 29, Game Informer put Grand Theft Auto VI on the cover of issue 382 with a 14-page feature built on interviews with Rockstar's lead designers, and one detail from it has been rattling around my head ever since: tropical storms and hurricanes are officially part of Leonida, Rockstar's version of Florida. Rain can fall in the distance while you stand in sunshine, puddles and wet surfaces stick around after a storm, and rainbows can show up when the light is right.
What Rockstar hasn't said, according to Game Informer, is how often the big storms hit or what they do to gameplay and the story. That gap is why I'm writing this. We're 48 days from launch, the game costs $79.99, and the difference between a beautiful backdrop and a real mechanic is worth talking about before anyone hits the buy button.

These aren't review scores, because nobody outside Rockstar has played the finished game. Excitement is how badly I want to; certainty is how much of that excitement rests on things Rockstar has actually confirmed. The gap between the two numbers is what the rest of this article is about.
What Rockstar confirmed, and what it didn't
GTA season online is a swamp of rumors, "leaks" and pre-order guides that all repeat each other. So I'm sorting everything into three piles: what's confirmed, where sources disagree, and what's still a blank.
What we can count on
- Launch on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
- $79.99 Standard Edition and $99.99 Ultimate Edition. Pre-orders opened June 25.
- Digital preloads begin November 12.
- Game Informer issue 382: a 14-page cover story, 12 new screenshots and interviews with Rockstar's lead designers.
- Per that coverage: 170-plus animal species, tropical storms and hurricanes, localized weather, RydeMe ride-share fast travel and a map roughly twice the size of GTA 5's.
Muddy
- GTA Online on day one. Variety reported that Rockstar's pricing announcement described the launch game as a single-player experience. Some third-party pre-order guides say Online is included at launch. I haven't found Rockstar settling it.
Not answered yet
- How often hurricanes hit and how they affect gameplay and the story.
- Which animals are Rare, Discoverable or Legendary. Rockstar kept those identities secret.
- What actually happens during a RydeMe shared ride.
- A PC version. No PC release has been announced.
I also didn't find a new trailer announced alongside the Game Informer issue, so everything above comes from the magazine's reporting and Rockstar's own pricing and pre-order announcements, not from fresh footage.
The hurricane question: gameplay or wallpaper?
Here's why a weather system has me this worked up. Rockstar's last open world, Red Dead Redemption 2, made weather feel like a character, even when it was mostly mood: the sky changed, the light changed, and you changed how you rode. Game Informer's coverage says the GTA 6 version is a re-engineered descendant of that tech, and the new wrinkle is that weather is both localized and persistent. A storm can sit over one part of the map while you're in sunshine, and the evidence of it lingers on the ground afterward.
Then come the hurricanes. A hurricane in a Grand Theft Auto game is the best excuse for chaos Rockstar has ever had. I'm picturing flooded streets, empty roads, boats where cars used to be. To be clear, that's me daydreaming, not a leak. Rockstar hasn't described any of it. And that's exactly the risk: this is also a fantastic way to waste a gorgeous system if all it ever changes is the lighting.
A hurricane that only changes the lighting is the world's most expensive screensaver. A hurricane that changes how the city behaves is the reason Leonida exists. My take, not Rockstar's
My guess, and it is only a guess, is that Rockstar will at least use storms as set-piece moments, because staging a spectacle is what this studio does better than anyone. What I'm hoping for is something more systemic, where the storm leaks into traffic, crowds and how safe the open road feels. The answer arrives on November 19, and I'm rooting for the systemic version.
My ranking: seven confirmed details, ordered by want-to-play
This is my own ranking of what Game Informer's story and Rockstar's announcements confirmed. I ordered it by how much each detail makes me want to play, not by how impressive the bullet point sounds. It's pure taste, which is exactly why you won't find it anywhere else.
- Localized, persistent weather (and hurricanes)Every sandbox gets better when the world reacts to the sky. This is the feature I'd defend first. My want-to-play: 10/10
- RydeMe, the ride-share fast travelFast travel is usually where a game stops being a world and turns into a menu. Reports on the feature say shared rides let you interact with other passengers, which could turn a loading gap into content. I just hope it stays skippable. My want-to-play: 8/10
- 170-plus animal species, with tracking tiersSome animals are classed Rare, Discoverable or Legendary, and Rockstar isn't naming them. For context, Rockstar said in 2018 that Red Dead Redemption 2 had around 200 species, so the raw number isn't a record. The hunt for secret animals is what sells me.My want-to-play: 8/10
- A map about twice the size of GTA 5'sBigger only works if it's denser too, and reports on the cover story say Rockstar is talking about density and NPC variety as well. The test is how often you get distracted on the way somewhere. My want-to-play: 7/10
- Kayaking, scuba diving, base jumping, jet skiing, mini golf, billiards and racingPlus gyms and zoos. Side activities are where Rockstar worlds earn their hundred hours, and this is a strong list for a state built around water. My want-to-play: 7/10
- Two leads: Jason Duval and Lucia CaminosDual protagonists are a gamble, but the pair is on the Game Informer cover, so they're clearly the center of the sales pitch. My want-to-play: 7/10
- Animal rendering with iridescence, bioluminescence and translucencyIt sounds gorgeous and I'll gawk at it for about five minutes. It ranks last because it's the one detail that doesn't change what I do.My want-to-play: 6/10
Is $79.99 too much? Rockstar's last three launches, side by side
Rockstar priced the Standard Edition at $79.99, which makes GTA 6 one of the first blockbuster games to climb past the $69.99 price that has become common. Here's the comparison I wanted, using the standard U.S. launch price of each mainline Rockstar blockbuster:
Grand Theft Auto V
$59.99Standard edition at launch on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
Red Dead Redemption 2
$59.99Standard edition at launch on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Grand Theft Auto VI
$79.99Standard Edition. The Ultimate Edition is $99.99.
The percentage and the inflation comparison are my own back-of-envelope math, not Rockstar's. Prices are U.S. dollars.
The arithmetic: $79.99 is about 33% higher than the $59.99 Rockstar charged for both of its last two blockbusters. That sounds like a lot. But a $59.99 game in 2013 is worth somewhere around $80 in today's dollars by standard inflation math, so in real terms Rockstar is mostly holding the line. I'd call the price steep, but I wouldn't call it a ripoff. If you play the way most people play Rockstar games, with months of free-roaming rather than a weekend sprint, the cost per hour will look fine.
My pick for almost everyone is the Standard Edition. Rockstar describes the Ultimate Edition as an exclusive collection of premium vehicles, weapons and apparel, and pricing roundups say Standard buyers can upgrade after launch. So there's no rush to decide on day one. One more practical note: coverage of Rockstar's announcement says anyone who pre-orders or buys the game before November 20 gets the Vintage Vice City Pack, and digital pre-orders include a month of GTA+. If that holds, you don't have to pre-order today just to catch the bonus.
The $399.99 Vice City box: who it's actually for
Rockstar also opened pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI: The Goodtime State – Vice City Collection, and the most important sentence about it is the one on Rockstar's store page: the game is sold separately. It's a Collector's Box, not an edition. It ships November 19, it's available while supplies last, and it's marked 18-plus. Reported size is roughly 19 by 13.5 by 12.5 inches. The 11 listed items are:
- Macca the Gator figureSix inches tall, with a stash compartment in the base.
- Oakley Frogskins sunglassesMatte black with Prizm Sapphire lenses and a pink GTA VI logo.
- New Era 9FORTY A-Frame snapbackVice City and Leonida embroidery and appliques.
- Leonida Keys crossbody bagRipstop fabric with a custom zipper pull.
- Macca the Gator magnetic mirrorA Vice City-themed collectible.
- Chunkee the Manatee shot glassBased on another fictional Leonida character.
- Vice City swizzle spoonEnamel Vice City logo.
- Vice City razor blade keychainEmbossed with GTA VI and Vice City branding.
- Leonida Keys enamel pin setComes in a custom metal tin.
- Premium sticker packArrives in a stash bag.
- Double-sided souvenir posterVice City artwork on one side, a Leonida map on the other.
Add the box to the Standard Edition and the total comes to $479.98. With the Ultimate Edition it's $499.98. Here's my own "who should buy what" ladder:
You want to play it
The full game at the lowest price. If you're not sure, this is the answer, and upgrading later is reportedly possible.
You want the extras on day one
Worth it only if premium vehicles, weapons and apparel matter to you from the first hour. For everyone else it's $20 you can decide on later.
You collect Rockstar's fiction
This is merchandise, not a game upgrade. It makes the most sense as a gift for someone who has already decided to love this world.
My honest take: I find the box charming and I understand why it exists. Building it around fictional Leonida products, like the Macca the Gator figure and the Chunkee the Manatee shot glass, is a smart way to extend the world beyond the screen. But I'm not tempted. "While supplies last" is a deadline made of marketing, and $399.99 for gear that isn't the game is a lot of money to spend before anyone has reviewed the game.
Four answers I still want before November 19
1. Is GTA Online there on day one?
Variety's report on the pricing announcement said Rockstar framed the launch as a single-player experience, while some pre-order guides claim Online is included. When sources disagree, I'd wait for Rockstar itself, because it changes what $79.99 buys you on launch week.
2. Do hurricanes change the story and the city, or just the sky?
Rockstar confirmed they exist and, per Game Informer, hasn't said how often they hit or how they affect gameplay and story. This is the question the whole article circles, and it's the one I'd ask Rockstar first.
3. What are the Rare, Discoverable and Legendary animals?
I actually like that Rockstar is keeping these secret. But I'd love to know whether tracking them is a fun side hunt or a checklist chore.
4. What does a RydeMe ride look like in practice?
Reports say you can interact with other passengers during shared trips. What I want to know is how long a ride takes, whether I can skip it, and whether it earns its place as a feature instead of being a fancy loading screen.
My 48-day plan
The launch date is a Thursday, one week before Thanksgiving in the U.S. (November 26), which, honestly, might be the best-timed release in years for anyone who can sneak in a long weekend. Here are the dates that matter:
- Today · October 248 days out. Decide which edition you actually want.
- November 12 · 41 days from nowDigital preloads begin.
- November 19 · ThursdayGTA 6 launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The Vice City Collection is scheduled to ship the same day.
- November 20Reported cutoff for the Vintage Vice City Pack pre-order bonus.
And here are the five things I'd do between now and then. They're my suggestions, not Rockstar's:
- Pick Standard unless you know why you want Ultimate. You can reportedly upgrade later, so there's no prize for deciding early.
- Clear space on your console before November 12.Preloads only help if the drive isn't full. Rockstar hasn't published the file size in anything I've found, so give yourself room.
- Don't let "while supplies last" rush the box.If you want it, buy it for a reason that has nothing to do with a countdown timer.
- Hold off if you're undecided.Nobody outside Rockstar has played the finished game. Launch-week reviews will answer more than any preview can.
- Protect your spoilers. The week before a launch like this is when your feed turns into a minefield. Mute the keywords now.
