Layoff memos tend to blur together. This one won't, at least for me. On Wednesday, Oct. 21, EA told its employees it is closing BioWare, the Edmonton studio behind Baldur's Gate, Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect and Dragon Age, and that the next Mass Effect, still in early development, is not going forward.
I want to handle this in a particular order. Facts first, straight from EA's own letter and the reporting around it. Then the part I care about more: what each statement leaves out, why I think this happened, and where I'd point someone who wants to meet BioWare's games for the first time.
Surprised? Not really. Sad? Yes, and I don't think that's only nostalgia talking. Satisfied with EA's explanation? No. The letter is clear about what EA is choosing and nearly silent on why this studio had to be the cost.
Three documents, three silences
News like this arrives in pieces, and every piece has a blind spot. So instead of one blended summary, here are the three main documents side by side. What each one says is the confirmed part. What each one leaves out is where the open questions live.
EA's staff letter, "Building EA's Next Chapter"
Signed by Cam Weber and David Tinson, posted on EA's news site on Oct. 21
It says
- BioWare and its Edmonton workspace are closing.
- A small BioWare team had been on early development of Mass Effect, and EA chose not to move forward with it.
- In action-adventure, EA will concentrate on fewer simultaneous, large-scale projects, starting with the Marvel's Iron Man and next Star Wars Jedi launches already on the way.
- Impacted employees will be supported in exploring other opportunities within EA.
It leaves out
- How many people are affected, and when the studio closes.
- Any mention of Dragon Age.
- What happens to the Mass Effect and Dragon Age brands.
BioWare's farewell post on X
Published by the studio the same day
It says
- After more than three decades, BioWare is closing and early development on the next Mass Effect project is ending.
- It names Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, Mass Effect and Anthem as its body of work.
- It includes a line I can't improve on: "There is nothing easy about writing those words."
It leaves out
- As reported, a closing date.
- As reported, whether either series continues somewhere else at EA.
Bloomberg's reporting, by Jason Schreier
Relayed by Variety, Quartz, PC Gamer and others
It says
- About 400 jobs are being cut across EA, roughly 3% of the workforce.
- About 50 of those roles are at BioWare.
- Variety adds that EA last reported around 14,500 employees.
It leaves out
- A headcount from EA itself. The letter on EA's site prints none, so these numbers are Bloomberg's.
- A full breakdown of the other roughly 350 cuts. Beyond the letter's changes to skate. and the pause on a Sims project, I didn't find one.
Put them together and you get a clear event and a foggy aftermath. The studio is closing, the game is dead, and about 50 people at BioWare are affected, per Bloomberg. Everything about the legacy, meaning the brands, the older games and what comes after EA's own offer to the people involved, is still blank.
BioWare in twelve dates
Thirty-one years doesn't fit in a paragraph, so here are twelve dates. Release years are public record. Where a line leans on someone's reporting, I say whose.
- 1995BioWare is founded in Edmonton, Alberta.
- 1998Baldur's Gate, the role-playing game that made the studio's name.
- 2003Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
- 2007The first Mass Effect arrives, and the trilogy runs through 2012. EA acquires BioWare the same year, according to Video Games Chronicle.
- 2009Dragon Age: Origins.
- 2014Dragon Age: Inquisition.
- 2017Mass Effect: Andromeda, which PC Gamer says wasn't as well received as the first three.
- 2019Anthem, the live-service shooter. PC Gamer says it failed to catch on the way EA hoped, and Video Games Chronicle notes it was shut down.
- 2021Mass Effect Legendary Edition remasters the trilogy.
- 2024Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Video Games Chronicle says reviews were mostly positive. Dot Esports reports it reached about 1.5 million players, roughly half of what EA expected, and PC Gamer notes EA later said it underperformed.
- Jan. 2025BioWare says a core team will work on the next Mass Effect and moves other developers to other EA teams, per TechRadar. Bloomberg reported the studio at fewer than 100 people, down from more than 200 two years earlier, as relayed by TipRanks.
- Oct. 21, 2026EA announces the closure and ends the next Mass Effect.
Look at the shape of it. 2007 to 2012 is a studio at the top of its craft. 2017 and 2019 are two bruises. 2024 is a comeback that didn't sell the way EA needed. Then one game at a time, and that one game gets canceled. It reads like a staircase, and I hate how clean it looks in hindsight, because nobody standing on it felt it that way.
What's confirmed and what nobody has said
Same information, sorted into two piles. If you're skimming, this is the section to save.
Confirmed
- BioWare is closing, and so is its Edmonton workspace.
- The next Mass Effect, in early development with a small team, is not moving forward.
- EA says it will support affected employees in exploring other opportunities within the company.
- EA plans to discuss its direction at its next Global Town Hall in November.
- Bloomberg reports about 400 jobs cut across EA, with about 50 at BioWare.
Not said, in what I read
- A closing date for the studio.
- Anything about Dragon Age in EA's letter.
- What EA plans for the Mass Effect and Dragon Age brands.
- Whether and how existing BioWare games will keep being supported.
- A BioWare headcount from EA itself.
I'd treat everything outside those two lists as opinion, including mine. The next sections are exactly that, and they're labeled as such.
Why EA did it: my five suspects
EA's explanation is that it took a hard look at its business and chose to concentrate on its biggest opportunities. I believe that's what the letter says. I just don't think it's the whole picture. Below are the five things I'd put on the table, with what's reported and how much weight I give each. The weights are my judgment, not data.
1. New owners, new math
My weight: heavyReported: EA went private in a $55 billion buyout that closed Aug. 4. Video Games Chronicle reports the deal leaves it paying around $1.8 billion a year in interest alone, and Dot Esports reports EA weighed closing or selling whole studios, BioWare included, right after the deal closed.
My read: I can't prove cause and effect, and the letter never mentions the buyout. But a closure announced less than three months after a leveraged deal closes is hard for me to read as coincidence. Our earlier breakdown of the buyout walks through the debt side.
2. The Veilguard sales miss
My weight: heavyReported: Dragon Age: The Veilguard launched in October 2024 to mostly positive reviews, per Video Games Chronicle, yet Dot Esports says it reached about 1.5 million players, roughly half of what EA expected.
My read: A game can be good and still land short of a spreadsheet. That's what a company hears when it sizes up a studio whose last release missed by half.
3. A Mass Effect with no date
My weight: mediumReported: The next Mass Effect was first confirmed in 2020 and was still in early development six years later, per Inven Global. Notebookcheck, citing Schreier, says only about 50 people were working on it.
My read: I wouldn't blame the team. The studio was also shrinking underneath them. But to someone reading a budget, a long timeline with no release date looks like risk.
4. A letter built for bigger bets
My weight: mediumReported: EA's letter organizes its portfolio around shooters, action-adventure, sports and lifestyle games, and promises fewer simultaneous, large-scale projects. Role-playing games don't get a heading of their own.
My read: That's the clearest official hint at the why. A mid-sized, story-first RPG without a giant license attached doesn't have an obvious row to sit in. It explains the "no" better than it explains why this studio.
5. The old bruises
My weight: lightReported: Andromeda (2017) was received less warmly than the original trilogy, and Anthem (2019) didn't catch on the way EA hoped, per PC Gamer.
My read: They shape how EA remembers the studio more than what happened this week, so I weigh them lightest.
Notice what isn't on my list: the idea that nobody cared. Plenty of people care about Mass Effect. That's exactly why the cancellation feels backwards to me, and why I think this is a spreadsheet story far more than a fan story.
What happens to Mass Effect, Dragon Age and the rest
Three questions keep coming up: what happens to Mass Effect, what happens to Dragon Age, and what about the other BioWare names. Here's the honest state of each.
Mass Effect
EA's letter ends the early-development project and stops there. Dot Esports notes EA hasn't said whether it will sell Mass Effect and Dragon Age or hand them to another internal studio.
Dragon Age
EA's letter doesn't mention Dragon Age at all. The Veilguard shipped in October 2024 and, per Dot Esports, ended up as BioWare's last game. A former Dragon Age leader has said publicly that he doesn't expect the series to return, according to Video Games Chronicle and PC Gamer. That's one person's read, not an EA announcement.
The other names on the wall
BioWare made the first two Baldur's Gate games and the original Knights of the Old Republic. Baldur's Gate 3 came from Larian Studios, so none of today's news touches it. If your search brought you here worried about that one, you can relax.
One more thing I'd rather say plainly than skip. Neither EA's letter nor BioWare's statement, as far as I can see, says anything about support for the games BioWare already released. I'm not going to guess in either direction.
My ranking: five BioWare games for a newcomer
This isn't a "best of" list. It's the order I'd hand BioWare's games to a friend who has never played any of them, from most welcoming to most demanding. All opinion, no data.
- Mass Effect Legendary Edition2021 · sci-fi · most welcomingStart here if you want a big story and a crew you'll end up caring about. It remasters all three original Mass Effect games, so you get the whole arc. If I could press one thing into a friend's hands, this would be it.
- Dragon Age: The Veilguard2024 · fantasy · most recentStart here if you want something current and want to judge it yourself. Reviews were mostly positive, per Video Games Chronicle, and EA still said it underperformed. Both can be true.
- Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic2003 · Star Wars · story firstStart here if you love Star Wars and care more about story than combat. It's old and feels old in places, but it's the one I'd hand to a friend who says "I just like the lore."
- Dragon Age: Origins2009 · dark fantasy · tacticalStart here if you like party-based fights and a darker tone. It asks for patience and pays it back in how much your choices stick.
- Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn2000 · tabletop-style · most demandingStart here if you're the kind of person who reads rulebooks for fun. It's dense, old and unforgiving, and a lot of what came later in the genre traces back to games like it.
Ranking is my own opinion, ordered by how easy each game is to step into, not by quality. I'm not making claims here about where or how any of these can be bought or played today.
What I'm taking from this
Start with the people. About 50 of them at BioWare, per Bloomberg, found out their studio is done. EA says it will support them in exploring other roles inside the company, and I hope that turns out to be generous in practice. A studio closing is never just a brand disappearing. It's a few dozen people losing the team they built things with.
Then the signal. Read EA's letter again and look at the headings: shooters, action-adventure, sports, lifestyle. There's no row for the mid-sized, story-first role-playing game BioWare built its name on. I don't read that as EA hating stories. I read it as EA wanting stories attached to something already big, like Iron Man or Star Wars. Whether that's smart is a separate question, and I can't answer it from here.
Here's where I land on the hopeful side, and I mean it. Baldur's Gate 3 won Game of the Year at The Game Awards in 2023, and it came from Larian, not BioWare. The audience for deep, choice-heavy RPGs is not a rumor. A studio can close without that audience going anywhere. I'd also bet on the people. Veterans of a 31-year studio don't stop making games because one building shut its doors.
What bugs me is the silence. When a studio dies and the brands it built just sit there, unmentioned, it feels like leaving a house with the lights on. Mass Effect and Dragon Age are EA's to decide about, as far as anyone has said, and nobody outside EA knows what that decision is. I'm not going to guess, and I'd be wary of anyone who sounds sure.
So here's the simplest thing I know to say. Go play one of those games. They're still good.
Quick answers

A former Dragon Age leader has said publicly that he does not expect the series to return, as covered by Video Games Chronicle and PC Gamer. That is one person's read, not an EA announcement.
What happens to Mass Effect now?
The next game is canceled. EA has not announced whether the Mass Effect franchise will continue, be sold or be handed to another studio.

Where was BioWare based?
BioWare was founded in 1995 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and EA says it is closing the studio's Edmonton workspace.
What else did EA announce in the same letter?
EA says Respawn and DICE will collaborate on a future shooter project, Apex Legends will get new multiplayer modes, and Marvel's Iron Man and the next Star Wars Jedi game remain on the way. EA SPORTS has a social-first open-world American football project called Project Gridiron and a Fight Night revival in pre-production. In The Sims, EA is prioritizing Project Evergreen and pausing Project Lotus, and skate. gets a smaller, more focused team.
