Some TV news lands like a press release. This one landed like a door closing in the next room. Criminal Minds has been quietly on somewhere in America since 2005, in living rooms, in hotel rooms, in the background of a thousand Sunday afternoons, and on Friday we learned it has one more season left. For a show that already survived being canceled once, that’s a strange kind of news to sit with.
What stuck with me most wasn’t the ending itself. Every show ends. It was the way it ended. The final batch of episodes had reportedly been shot before anyone outside the building knew it would be the last, which means the people who made it were saying goodbye to something they didn’t know they were saying goodbye to. I keep turning that over.
So here’s how this piece works. I’ll lay out what’s actually confirmed, flag what’s only reported, and tell you plainly where I’m giving you my own opinion. I’m an optimist about this show, and I think there’s a good version of this farewell. I also think the way it got here deserves some honesty. Both things can be true.
The Key Points
- Paramount+ announced on Oct. 30, 2026 that Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 20 will be the series’ last. It will premiere in 2027, and I found no premiere date or episode count in the coverage I reviewed.
- The original series ran 15 seasons on CBS from 2005 to 2020, and the Paramount+ revival adds five more, which is where the “20 seasons” comes from.
- Deadline reports that Season 20 wrapped production earlier this fall, so it won’t deliver a proper ending. Showrunner Erica Messer’s own statement describes the team as navigating an end that came suddenly.
- My take: the cast and creators deserved a planned finale. Whether Season 20 can still feel like one is the question I’ll be watching for in 2027.
Is Criminal Minds really ending? What Paramount+ announced on Oct. 30
Yes. On Friday, Oct. 30, Paramount+ said the upcoming 20th season of Criminal Minds: Evolution will be the series’ final one on the service, and it shared first-look photos from the new episodes at the same time. TheWrap reports the batch will air sometime in 2027. This will be the fifth season of the revival, which debuted in 2022 after the original run on CBS.
Messer, who is the showrunner and an executive producer, put out a statement. She said it’s hard to put into words what the show has meant, first on CBS for 15 seasons and then on Paramount+ for five, and that she’s grateful to the cast, writers, directors, crew and fans. She also said the team is “suddenly navigating the end of this chapter,” and that they’re looking forward to sharing Season 20 and celebrating the show’s legacy.
Two things the announcement does not include, as far as I could find: a premiere date and an episode count. “2027” is the only timing on the record. If you see a specific month floating around social media, treat it as a guess until Paramount+ says it.
FILE 02 The ending questionWhy Season 20 may not have a planned series finale
This is the part of the story I find most interesting, and the part where it’s easy to overstate things, so let me be careful. Deadline reports that Season 20 wrapped production earlier this fall, which means the season was finished before the decision to end the show became public, and that it therefore won’t give fans a proper ending. Deadline’s reporting adds that the decision was made recently, which makes it the first official cancellation under Paramount+’s new leadership.
Paramount+ hasn’t publicly explained why, in the coverage I reviewed. Parade noted that the timing overlaps with the Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery merger being allowed to move ahead, but I didn’t see anyone tie the two together with evidence, so I’d read that as context rather than a cause.
Confirmed
- Season 20 is the last, and it arrives in 2027.
- Production on the season has already wrapped.
- Messer’s statement describes a sudden end to the chapter.
- Seven main cast members are set to return.
Not confirmed
- A premiere date or an episode count.
- The reason Paramount+ made the call.
- Whether the season’s last scene will feel like a finale or a cliffhanger.
- Any plan for a revival, spinoff or move to another platform.
Here’s my honest read. Parade suggests the already-finished season could mean a cliffhanger is waiting, and that’s possible. But a cliffhanger isn’t a finale. It’s a question mark with a credits roll. After 20 seasons, I’d want an answer. I’m hopeful the writers found a way to make the last episode feel like a landing, and I’m also realistic that a team can’t write a farewell it didn’t know it needed.
FILE 03 The numbersCriminal Minds by the numbers: 20 seasons, 364 episodes and where it ranks
The ranking is worth a pause. Deadline says that even if the combined run stays at 20 seasons, Criminal Minds is tied for fifth among the longest-running drama series, behind Law & Order: SVU, Law & Order, NCIS and Grey’s Anatomy. It also notes that all four of those are still on the air. That’s the company this show keeps.
Timeline: from CBS in 2005 to the Oct. 30 announcement
Criminal Minds, created by Jeff Davis, begins its run on CBS.
The original series reaches its end after Season 15.
Criminal Minds: Evolution premieres on Paramount+. It’s counted as Season 16 overall.
Season 18 premieres with 10 episodes, after the 2023 strikes delayed its production, per Parade.
Paramount+ gives the show an early renewal for Season 20, ahead of Season 19.
Season 19 premieres.
Paramount+ announces Season 20 will be the last and shares first-look photos.
Look at that fifth entry again. In March, the show was renewed early for a season that would turn out to be its last. For months, everyone involved reasonably believed there was a runway. That’s the part that makes the word “suddenly” in Messer’s statement land the way it does.
FILE 05 The castWho is returning for Season 20, and who isn’t
Paramount+ says Joe Mantegna, A.J. Cook, Kirsten Vangsness, Aisha Tyler, RJ Hatanaka, Adam Rodriguez and Paget Brewster are all set to return. The one notable name confirmed as not coming back, according to Parade, is Zach Gilford as Voit, whose storyline ended with him taking the fall for killing the UnSub to protect his daughter.
There’s a small hint about the focus of the final season, too, and it predates the ending news. In an earlier interview with TV Insider about the Season 19 finale, Messer was asked who Season 20 would center on, and her answer was Rossi, the character played by Mantegna. That was a conversation about a season that was expected to have more seasons after it, so I wouldn’t read it as a finale plan. It’s still a clue about where the story’s weight sits.
FILE 06 The comeback questionCan Criminal Minds come back again?
Nothing has been announced. What exists so far is a pattern and a few hopeful words. The pattern: CBS ended the original run, and the team found a way to bring it back on Paramount+. The franchise also tried two spinoffs, Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, which ran one season, and Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, which ran two.
The hopeful words: Vangsness said after the news that her boss believes there are many more stories to tell, so if they get to keep telling them somewhere, that would be wonderful. Deadline’s own framing was that the show is ending its run “for now” across two incarnations on two platforms. And Messer’s phrase was “this chapter,” not “this story.”
My opinion, for what it’s worth: that language is a door left unlocked, not an open one. This franchise has shown it can find a second life, and I find that genuinely encouraging. But I’d treat Season 20 as the last guaranteed hour and anything beyond it as a bonus.
FILE 07 My scorecardMy scorecard: how I grade this goodbye
I built this scorecard myself. The grades are opinions about how the ending is being handled, not about episodes I haven’t seen.
How to catch up before Season 20: my three-lane plan
You don’t need to watch 364 episodes to say goodbye properly, though some of you will. Here are three lanes based on the episode math above. They’re my suggestions, built on episode counts, not on runtimes, which I didn’t verify.
Start with Criminal Minds: Evolution, which is on Paramount+. It’s the fastest way to know today’s team and the stories Season 20 will carry forward. You’ll feel gaps about older history, but you’ll be caught up on the people who matter now.
The completist’s lane. One episode a night for a full year is a lovely way to say goodbye, but the 2027 premiere date isn’t known, so I wouldn’t plan this lane around finishing before it. I didn’t verify where the original 15 seasons stream today, so check your own services.
Nothing to do but wait. If you want something to fill the time, a rewatch of a season you loved is a better use of an evening than doom-scrolling reactions.

Sometime in 2027. No premiere date has been announced in the coverage I reviewed.
How many seasons of Criminal Minds are there?
Twenty once Season 20 airs: 15 on CBS from 2005 to 2020 and five on Paramount+ as Criminal Minds: Evolution. Through Season 19, Wikipedia’s list counts 364 episodes.
Will Season 20 have a series finale?
Deadline says the season wrapped before the news and won’t give fans a proper ending. Parade suggests a cliffhanger is possible. Nobody outside the production can say for sure until it airs.

How many episodes is Season 20?
I found no announced episode count.
Why was Criminal Minds: Evolution ended?
Paramount+ hasn’t given a public reason in the coverage I reviewed. Deadline’s sources describe the decision as recent and the first cancellation under new Paramount+ leadership.
Could Criminal Minds return on another platform?
No revival or spinoff has been announced. Vangsness expressed hope that the stories could continue somewhere, but that’s a wish, not a plan.
Should you keep watching Criminal Minds? My verdict
This is a verdict on whether to follow the show to its end, not a review of Season 20, which hasn’t aired.
My verdict: this show earned a planned finale. Whether Season 20 can still feel like one is up to the people who made it, and judging by how many of them stayed through the move to streaming, I’m rooting for them.
