My first thought when I heard Blade Runner was coming to TV was rain. Neon, steam, an umbrella glowing in a puddle. It's the picture the franchise burned into all of us. Then Prime Video showed up at New York Comic Con on Saturday with a new Blade Runner 2099 trailer and a plan to lean on daylight instead.

I'll give you the practical stuff first, because it's probably why you're here. The series premieres Wednesday, Nov. 25, on Prime Video, all eight episodes at once. Then I'll tell you what I think, which is that leaving the rain behind is the boldest move this franchise could make, and maybe the smartest.

The Essentials

  • Blade Runner 2099 premieres Wednesday, Nov. 25, on Prime Video, with all eight episodes released at once. It stars Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer and is set in Los Angeles 50 years after Blade Runner 2049.
  • The new look is what Screen Realm calls "sunshine noir," with harsh daylight in place of the franchise's rain. The story follows a dying Replicant Blade Runner and a human posing as one while they look for a missing colleague named Merrick.
  • You don't have to watch the earlier movies, according to Yeoh. My take: the daylight gamble is the right one, and the Olwen and Cora pairing is what will make or break it.
Signal 01 · The Date

When does Blade Runner 2099 come out, and will all eight episodes drop at once?

Yes to the second part. Prime Video says all eight episodes of Blade Runner 2099 arrive together on Nov. 25, 2026, in more than 240 countries and territories. No weekly drip and no waiting a week to find out what happened to the missing Blade Runner at the center of the story. Press play and it's all there.

Look at that date for a second. Nov. 25 is a Wednesday, and Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, Nov. 26. Prime Video hasn't said that's why it picked the day, so I'm not going to pretend I know. But if I were handing eight episodes of a mystery to people about to get a long weekend, I'd do exactly this.

My one hesitation is the all-at-once part. Mysteries are better when you get a week between episodes to argue about who did what. With a full drop, the arguing happens in one big blob and the first person to finish gets to spoil it for everybody else. I'd probably still binge it. I'm only human, and I've been waiting a long time. The title was first announced back in February 2022.

Signal 02 · The Story

What is Blade Runner 2099 about? The story, without spoilers

The simplest way to say it is that the Replicants won. The series is set in a Los Angeles now run by the artificial beings humans once built to work for them, and the people who refuse to accept that are the ones being hunted. Showrunner Silka Luisa described the story as taking place at a turning point, when one species gives way to a new one.

Michelle Yeoh plays Olwen, a Replicant Blade Runner who, according to Screen Realm's breakdown of the trailer, is in the final week of her life. Replicants know when they're going to die, and Luisa told IGN that makes it harder, because it comes sooner than it should. Hunter Schafer plays Cora, a human who has spent most of her life hiding. After her workplace is raided she runs, with a younger brother to protect, and then takes an enormous gamble: she poses as a Replicant and goes undercover as a Blade Runner with the LAPD. Working next to Olwen, who would normally be hunting someone exactly like her.

On paper, Olwen is chasing human insurgents. In reality she's looking for Merrick, a fellow Blade Runner who vanished, and who, according to the same coverage, helped build the society he now seems to have walked away from. Luisa framed the central question at the NYCC panel as why somebody who fought and sacrificed for all this power would turn his back on it. Around that mystery sit missing Replicants, a runaway carrying a secret and the tease of a cure for the short Replicant lifespan.

Producer Broderick Johnson compared the partnership to The Departed, per Forbes' panel report, and that tells me everything about the engine here. It's an undercover story first, with a ticking clock on one lead and a lie on the other. Matthew Needham, who plays Olwen's junior partner, called it a detective story with a beautiful mystery at its heart.

Locked in
  • Premiere on Nov. 25, all eight episodes together

  • Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer as the leads
  • Set 50 years after Blade Runner 2049

  • Whether anyone from the earlier films appears. No cast list I found includes anyone
  • Critic reviews. I couldn't find any as of Sunday, Oct. 11
  • Whether the story continues after eight episodes
Signal 03 · The Look

What is "sunshine noir," and why doesn't Blade Runner 2099 look like the rainy originals?

Here's the part that stopped me. Screen Realm's coverage says the series introduces an aesthetic it calls "sunshine noir," with harsh daylight and an industrial feel, in a franchise most of us associate with darkness and relentless rain. At the NYCC panel, Luisa explained where it came from. The show is about a birth, she said, the birth of a city, a society and new characters, and when she thinks of birth she thinks of something "hot, sticky, bright, chaotic."

That's a story reason, not just a style choice, and I like it a lot. A war has just ended in this version of Los Angeles. Luisa and production designer Paul Inglis told IGN that damaged infrastructure and disrupted manufacturing pushed them back toward the exposed, repairable machinery of Ridley Scott's original film, and that the police spinners were redesigned to look heavier and more threatening.

The Blade Runner we remember
The weatherDarkness and relentless rain
Who's huntingBlade Runners hunt rogue Replicants
Who's in chargeHumans
Blade Runner 2099
The weatherHarsh daylight, hot and bright
Who's huntingBlade Runners hunt humans who resist Replicant rule
Who's in chargeReplicants

Here's where I come down. Another coat of rain and neon would have looked gorgeous and felt like a cover band. Swapping in daylight tells me the people making this understand what the originals were really about, which was never the weather. It was the question of who counts as a person, and that question doesn't need rain. It might land harder in bright light, where nobody gets to hide in the shadows.

That's also why the photo at the top of this page is a rainy night. It's the picture most of us carry around when we hear the title, and the show seems to know it. Walking away from that image on purpose feels more deliberate than just never having had it.

I do have one worry. Daylight is unforgiving. Rain and neon are famously good at hiding the seams of a set or an effect, and bright sun shows everything. If this world doesn't feel lived in, "sunshine noir" could read as flat. I'm working from reporting on the trailer and the panel, not from a screening, so I can't judge that yet. I just know it's the real risk.

Signal 04 · The Cast

Who is in the Blade Runner 2099 cast? Every confirmed actor and role

Cast and crew, as reported
Michelle YeohOlwen, a Replicant Blade Runner near the end of her life
Hunter SchaferCora, a human fugitive posing as a Replicant Blade Runner
Matthew NeedhamDescribed at the panel as Olwen's junior partner
Series regularsDimitri Abold (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes) and Lewis Gribben (Somewhere Boy)
RecurringKatelyn Rose Downey, Daniel Rigby, Johnny Harris, Amy Lennox, Sheila Atim, Matthew Needham, Tom Burke and Maurizio Lombardi
ShowrunnerSilka Luisa, who created the series
DirectorJonathan van Tulleken (Shōgun) directed the first two episodes and is an executive producer
Executive producersRidley Scott, Blade Runner 2049 co-writer Michael Green, and Alcon's Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson

Here's what I couldn't find: any cast list that includes someone from the earlier films, Harrison Ford included, or any mention of a cameo in the panel coverage. That's not a prediction. It's just what's out there, and I'd rather tell you that than guess.

What I did find is a cast that sounds genuinely excited. Yeoh said she was excited to play a Replicant instead of a human and joked about keeping up with Schafer, her frequent scene partner. Schafer said the franchise changed science fiction as a genre. When the people on stage talk about the old movies with reverence instead of eye-rolling, I relax a little.

Signal 05 · The Homework

Do you need to watch Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049 before Blade Runner 2099?

Short answer: no. Collider reports that Yeoh says you can skip Ridley Scott's original before the series, and that it was built as a standalone, one-and-done story, with some direct input from Scott himself. In other words, the show isn't going to quiz you.

That said, Screen Realm reports that the filmmakers have teased a mystery with clues that reach back through both films, and the series is set 50 years after 2049. Here's the whole franchise in the order the stories happen, so you can decide how much homework you want.

  1. Blade Runner (1982)

Ridley Scott's original film, set in a future Los Angeles. This is where the rain and neon come from.

  2. Shorts and an anime in between

Three short films released in 2017 fill in the years before the sequel, and the animated series Blade Runner: Black Lotus (2021) is set between the first film and 2049, per JustWatch's franchise guide.

  3. Blade Runner 2049 (2017)

Denis Villeneuve's sequel, released nine years ago this month.

  4. Blade Runner 2099 (Nov. 25, 2026)

Fifty years later, and the first live-action TV series in the franchise.

My advice, if you've got the time and nothing is forcing you: watch 2049. Not because you'll be tested, but because it's where the story of the uprising was left brewing, and it'll make the first episode hit harder. And if you've never seen the 1982 original, watch it for the rain. You'll understand exactly what 2099 is choosing to leave behind, and that choice feels a lot bolder when you've lived inside the thing it's walking away from.

Signal 06 · The Bets

My Blade Runner 2099 bet slip: five things that will decide whether it works

These are my predictions, built from the reporting on the trailer, the clips and the panel. I haven't seen an episode, so I'm rating my own confidence, not scoring the show.

  1. The daylight look becomes the show's identityHigh confidence

A series that commits this hard to one visual idea gives people something to argue about, and arguments travel. I'd bet the screenshots everyone shares are bright, not dark.

  2. The Olwen and Cora pairing carries itHigh confidence

Nearly every reported detail points at the two-hander, from Luisa's enemies-to-allies idea to the Departed comparison. One lead is running out of time and the other is living a lie. That's a built-in stake in every scene.

  3. The Merrick mystery pays off in eight episodesMedium confidence

It's a strong question. Why would someone walk away from the power he fought for? Mysteries live or die on the answer, and eight episodes is long enough to hide a twist and short enough to avoid padding. I'm hopeful, not certain.

  4. A Replicant-run Los Angeles gives the franchise its sharpest politics yetMedium confidence

Flip who holds the power and the old questions get uncomfortable. Screen Realm notes that Replicant abilities don't make them kind rulers, and the red-light district that sells human experiences to Replicants suggests the show knows power doesn't fix longing. If it shows them as flawed as the humans before them, that could be the best thing in it.

  5. Dropping all eight at once helps more than it hurtsLow confidence

The holiday window is smart, but a mystery loses something when nobody gets a week to theorize. I think the bingers win. I'm just not very sure.

Signal 07 · The Call

Should you be excited for Blade Runner 2099? My honest take

My Quick Take

I'm excited, and I'm trying to keep that in check. There are no reviews yet, and I'm going on reporting, not a screening. What I like is the nerve: a franchise famous for rain is betting on sunlight, and it's betting that two actors and a good mystery can carry eight episodes. If you like detective stories with a sci-fi twist, mark Nov. 25. If you want a copy of the 1982 look, this probably isn't it, and I think that's the point.

If you're deciding whether to carve out a long weekend for it, here's my rule of thumb. Wait for the first reviews if you're a "show me the Rotten Tomatoes score" person, and go in blind if the trailer already sold you. Either way, you'll have time. There's still 45 days of trailers, rumors and rewatching to get through.
