Marvel’s X-Men may have found its Bobby Drake. On Monday, Nov. 2, Deadline reported that Ben Wang, the actor from Karate Kid: Legends, The Long Walk and American Born Chinese, is in talks to play Iceman. Within hours The Wrap, Dark Horizons, Nerdist and plenty of others had passed the news along, and a lot of fans had already picked a side.

Here’s the part I’d like us to hold onto for the whole article: it isn’t official. Marvel hasn’t announced anything. Deadline’s wording is that Wang is in talks, and the other names in the story, Gabriel LaBelle, Jackson Kelly and Rhenzy Feliz, are described as actors who tested, something Deadline says it has heard but hasn’t confirmed.

So rather than one more pile of hot takes, I want to do three useful things. I’ll sort what’s confirmed from what’s only reported. I’ll put the five original X-Men on one scoreboard so you can see how close Marvel is to a full team. And I’ll share the checklist I’d use to judge whoever ends up playing Iceman. Where it’s my opinion, I’ll say so.

The Key Points

  • Deadline reported on Nov. 2 that Ben Wang is in talks to play Iceman in Marvel Studios’ X-Men, and The Wrap reported the same. Marvel hasn’t confirmed it.
  • Deadline says it has heard LaBelle, Kelly and Feliz were among the actors who tested. It calls that unconfirmed.
  • The film is directed by Jake Schreier and opens May 5, 2028. Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo are working on the screenplay, per SuperHeroHype and other coverage.
  • Three of the five original X-Men have actors (Cyclops, Jean Grey, Angel), Iceman is reportedly in talks, and Beast has no one announced.
  • My take: it’s a smart, low-ego pick. The real test is whether Marvel lets Bobby Drake be funny and frightened at the same time.
01 · The report

Ben Wang as Iceman: what Deadline actually reported, and how far the story has traveled

Cold front · Mon, Nov. 2, 2026 In talks. Not signed. Not announced. Deadline exclusive, citing multiple sources, then matched by The Wrap

Wang would play Bobby Drake, Iceman, in Marvel Studios’ X-Men, directed by Jake Schreier and set for May 5, 2028.

Deadline’s exclusive says Wang is circling the role, and it describes the other actors who tested as something it has heard but can’t confirm. The Wrap followed with its own report that he’s in talks, after Deadline broke the story. GamesRadar, Gizmodo and Bleeding Cool all use the same cautious language, and Gizmodo adds that the casting hasn’t been made official.

One detail is worth flagging because it’s the kind of thing that confuses people. After the Deadline story, Borys Kit of The Hollywood Reporter posted on X that Wang got the role, and SuperHeroHype ran that under a headline that treats it as settled. Most other outlets stuck with “in talks.” I’d read the whole thing as “very likely, not final.” A trade reporter’s post is a strong signal, but it isn’t Marvel saying it out loud.

02 · The meter

How official is a casting report? The Freeze Meter, and where this one sits

I made this little scale for myself because casting stories get flattened into “confirmed” or “fake,” and the truth lives in between. Here’s where Wang’s Iceman story stands today.

  1. 1Casting chatterNames float around fan circles and social feeds. Cheap to start, easy to get wrong.
  2. 2A trade reports who testedDeadline says LaBelle, Kelly and Feliz were among those who tested, and calls that unconfirmed.
  3. 3Reported talks You are hereDeadline and The Wrap say Wang is in talks. Several outlets repeat it, and one reporter says he got the part.
  4. 4The deal closesContracts get signed. Talks can still fall apart over schedules, money or scope, as deals sometimes do.
  5. 5Marvel announces itThe studio says it. Until this step, “reported” is the honest word.

That’s the whole reason I keep writing “reportedly.” It isn’t hedging for the sake of it. It’s the difference between telling you what happened and telling you what people believe is about to happen.

03 · Sorting the noise

What’s confirmed, what’s reported and what’s just noise in the X-Men casting news

Confirmed or officially announced
  • Marvel Studios has an X-Men movie dated May 5, 2028, directed by Jake Schreier.
  • Sadie Sink (Jean Grey), Kit Connor (Cyclops), Christopher Abbott (Professor X), Samara Weaving (Emma Frost), Inde Navarrette (Rogue), Maya Boyd (Storm) and Adam Driver (Mister Sinister) were revealed as cast, with several introduced at Marvel’s D23 presentation in August 2026, per SuperHeroHype.
  • Marvel hasn’t revealed the plot or a complete cast.
Reported, not officially announced
  • Ben Wang is in talks to play Iceman (Deadline, The Wrap).
  • Gabriel LaBelle, Jackson Kelly and Rhenzy Feliz tested for the part (Deadline, unconfirmed).
  • Asa Germann has joined as Angel, per SuperHeroHype and Nerdist.
Rumor, treat with care
  • Dark Horizons mentions a recent rumor tying Morgan Spector to Magneto. I haven’t seen it confirmed by a trade report, so I’m not building anything on it.
  • Any claim about Iceman’s storyline in the film. Nobody has announced a plot.
04 · The team

The Original Five scoreboard: how close is Marvel to a full X-Men team?

This is the part that got me excited, so I built a scoreboard. The team in X-Men #1 from 1963 was Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Angel and Iceman. Here’s where each stands for the new movie, and who played them in Fox’s films.

CyclopsScott SummersAnnounced
Kit Connor

Played before by James Marsden in the Fox films.

Jean GreyOriginally Marvel GirlAnnounced
Sadie Sink

Played before by Famke Janssen. The Wrap notes Sink’s Jean was introduced in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

AngelWarren Worthington IIICast, per reports
Asa Germann

Played before by Ben Foster in X-Men: The Last Stand.

IcemanBobby DrakeIn talks
Ben Wang

Played before by Shawn Ashmore in the Fox films.

BeastHank McCoyNo actor announced
Open

Played before by Kelsey Grammer and Nicholas Hoult. Nerdist says different actors are known to have auditioned.

Scoreboard: 3 of 5 have actors, 1 is in talks, 1 is open. If Wang signs, Beast would be the only original member left without an actor, as One Mann’s Movies put it.

Nerdist makes the case that this could be the first time all five original X-Men are on a live-action team together, if the movie starts with that lineup. I want to be careful, because Marvel hasn’t said how the story begins, and Nerdist itself guesses that Emma Frost, Rogue and Storm won’t start out on the team. But as a fan of the comic, I find the idea of a true “class one” genuinely hopeful. It would be a chance to watch these people become a team instead of arriving already finished.

05 · The actor

Who is Ben Wang? The credits that matter for this role

If you only know Wang from headlines this week, here’s the short version of his résumé. Press coverage has also pointed out that he’s 29, which I’ll get to in a moment.

American Born ChineseDisney+

A comedy-fantasy series that Wang led. It’s a good sign that he can carry a story and a joke at the same time.

Karate Kid: Legends2025

A legacy sequel where he’s in the middle of the action. It shows the physical side of the job.

The Long Walk2025

A bleak Stephen King adaptation from director Francis Lawrence. A very different tone, and a reminder that Iceman isn’t only a quipster.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the ReapingNov. 20, 2026

Coverage lists him in the cast, so audiences will see him in a huge franchise before the X-Men casting is even final. I covered that movie’s release details in my Sunrise on the Reaping guide.

On the age point: Yahoo Entertainment reports that some fans were surprised he’s 29, and some worry it could matter in later movies. I understand the instinct, since Bobby Drake started as a teenager in the comics. But the story hasn’t been announced, and this cast leans young. I’d rather judge the performance than the birth certificate.

06 · The character

Iceman 101: who Bobby Drake is, who played him before and why this role matters

Iceman, real name Bobby Drake, first appeared in The X-Men #1 in September 1963, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. He’s a founding member of the team, and his power is cryokinesis: he can create and control ice and cold. Many people of a certain age also know him from the 1980s cartoon Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, which Nerdist notes introduced him to a new generation.

On screen, Shawn Ashmore played him in Fox’s X-Men films, ending with X-Men: Days of Future Past in 2014. In the comics, Marvel established Iceman as gay in 2015, which Nerdist and Yahoo both note makes him one of Marvel’s most prominent LGBTQ heroes. Marvel hasn’t said how the movie will treat that, and no plot has been announced, so I’m not going to guess. I’ll just say it’s a big reason fans care who gets the part.

07 · My checklist

My Bobby Drake checklist: five things I’d look for before I call this a great casting

This is my own test, not anything Marvel or the trades have said. For each item I’ve marked how much the public record can actually tell us today. Spoiler: it can’t tell us the most important parts yet.

1
Funny under pressure

Bobby’s jokes are armor. The best versions of him make you laugh and then notice what the joke is hiding.

Encouraging
2
Scared underneath

The character works when the cool exterior cracks. That takes a dramatic actor, not just a comic one.

Some evidence
3
Chemistry with the team

Iceman is a team player. If the Original Five feel like friends, the movie has a heartbeat.

Can’t judge yet
4
A power that grows

Ice can be a snowball or a sculpture or something far scarier. I’d love to see the movie give him room to surprise us.

Depends on the script
5
Care with who he is

Fans know the 2015 comic story. Whatever Marvel chooses to do, it should do it with thought, not as a marketing line.

Nothing announced

Notice the pattern: the first two come from the actor’s record, and the last three come from the filmmakers. That’s why I can like the pick and still say it’s unproven.

08 · My take

My take: why Ben Wang as Iceman feels like the right kind of gamble

Quick verdict · My read, Nov. 3
The pickSmart and low-ego. Wang has shown comedy, action and heavy drama in three very different projects.
The statusReported, not official. Deadline and The Wrap say talks, and Marvel hasn’t spoken.
My worryNot the actor. It’s whether a crowded ensemble leaves Bobby enough room to be a person.

I keep coming back to how un-flashy this choice is, and I mean that as a compliment. Marvel could have gone for a huge name. Instead the reported finalist is an actor who has quietly built a résumé across tones, and whose biggest franchise film is still weeks away. There’s something encouraging about a studio choosing the person who might be right over the person who’d make the loudest headline.

The best counterargument I’ve seen is the one about age. I don’t dismiss it, but I don’t think it’s the real question. Iceman works or doesn’t work because of how the script uses him. If he’s a punchline with a freeze ray, nobody could save him. If he’s a nervous kid hiding behind jokes who slowly realizes how powerful he is, a lot of actors could make that land, and Wang at least looks like someone who could.

And I’ll be honest about the thing I can’t know: whether this will be a good movie. A casting report is a first step, not a verdict. But I’m allowed to feel a little optimistic, and I do. The X-Men have been waiting a long time for a fresh start inside Marvel’s universe, and the Original Five are the right place to build from.

09 · What next

Signals worth watching as the Iceman casting moves from reported to official

A Marvel announcementThe only thing that turns “in talks” into a fact is the studio saying it.
The Beast questionIf Wang signs, Beast is the last of the Original Five without an actor, and Nerdist says several actors have auditioned.
Nov. 20: The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the ReapingWang is in the cast, so it’s the first big look at him in a franchise film this season.
The plotMarvel hasn’t revealed what the movie is about. That detail will shape how every one of these actors gets used.

For where X-Men fits in Marvel’s calendar, my Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars release dates guide has the timeline, and Laughing Place notes the X-Men film is set to arrive after Avengers: Secret Wars. If you’re curious about another piece of this cast, I wrote about Inde Navarrette’s Rogue accent clip.

HOW WE REPORTED THIS

Independently reported and written for this story from published coverage on Nov. 3, 2026. Ben Wang’s Iceman role comes from Deadline’s Nov. 2 exclusive and The Wrap’s follow-up, and is described here as reported, not confirmed. The Original Five scoreboard, the Freeze Meter and the Bobby Drake checklist are my own analysis, not information from Marvel Studios. The cover photo is a real free-to-use image of ice crystals, chosen as a visual stand-in for Iceman; it is not a still from the film and does not show anyone from the cast.
